This is lament of a Sailor over an unappreciative passenger. He hopes to appeal to the conscience of the passenger to reestablish a warm relationship again. Some readers however see the very opposite of this.

When I was a sailor at sea,

I still can see your smiles at sea,
But I see you’ve forgot the sea,
And no more remembers the sailor at sea.
You may again desire the sea,
But the tides may be low at sea,
Too late to ride you across the sea.
