Being with a person who you do not enjoy when you're
on a date, because he or she doesn't have the kind of
personality or incite into what would bring out an interest from you.

Evening Companion

Speak to me of simple things,
of rocks and seas and times;
of stars with lights
that glitter bright
at night along the shore.
About those holly berries please
beyond the windowpane,
rounded they rest on leaves
in reams of glowing green.
A touch of frost,
a fringe of tan,
the ruddy orbs of gold,
wax-colored amber berries seem
cold as the winter snow.
I love the simple things, each bower;
each meadow, field and flower,
the children playing in the park
the sounds of people after dark.
Oh, can’t you see one simple thought
on streams of blowing wind,
the chambers stained with coffee smoke
the nodding couples drinking coke
and munching on their dreams.
Some people move from sugar bowls
and do refuse to see
the things unreal, unsound to feel
before their evening meal.
They cannot see past windowpanes
nor look into the glare
and soon their dreams just blow away
into the winter air.
The simple things die on the wind
as meaningless as tears;
they come, they run,
they drop, they fall
like night they disappear.
In jokes and jests the time goes by.
To live we pay the price.
But little things they stand, out-stay
the melted cubes of ice.
