Mrs Raleigh’s Valentine
The rest home nurse asked me, do you know , Mrs Raleigh?
No not really well, but I knew her husband, Mister Charlie
Worked for him some years ago; heard that she was in here,
Got a call to please stop by and bring her a little cheer,
Hello Mrs, Raleigh do you remember me?,
Oh Thomas , yes I know your voice, but I can hardly see,
Thank you son for coming,; I was praying that you could,
I’ve felt so badly lately, help me sit up if you would,
Son , it’s terrible getting old, and dear Charlie’s passed,
He would visit every day ; a year ago today, his last,
I hope I didn’t put you out, but son I have no one,
My family’s all too busy and visits there are none,
You see that dog eared Bible, laying there on that stand
It’s got a card there in it, written in dear Charlie’s hand,
I’ve not been able to read it, since my eyesight got so dim,
Would you please read it for me, it’s the last I have from him ,
The card was advertisement with a Funeral Home address,
And as I turned it over , it clutched my heart in sadness,
Plainly I could see the story; this was Charlie’s way,
He knew his life was ending, this was his goodbye day,
I read his letter to her .Mrs Raleigh was in tears,
A sweet memory I’d remember all these many years,
Dearest Babe, I love you as you’ve always known,
I don’t have the heart to tell you that soon you’ll be alone,
Remember this is our day and it’s always great,
I wish that it was yesterday , we could celebrate,
I’m sorry for this awful note , couldn’t get in town to buy,
But Darling it’s our Special day and I just had to try.
And here I am to hold your hand; I don’t have words to say.
But Happy Anniversary Darling , it’s Valentine’s today,
A breath of Spring you always bring to this old heart of mine,
Wish I could begin; live it all again with you as my Valentine,
I was gonna bring the first one that you gave me years ago,
I think I have it in the house, but where I just don’t know,
The stairway is so hard to climb, I’m just too weak ,I fear
I’m sorry I couldn’t find it, please Forgive me dear,
Love Forever , Charlie, was the way he signed that note,
I wish that I had known him better; what loving words he wrote,
Some weeks later I saw the obituary for a Mrs Raleigh,
I thought how wonderful it would be to join her Darling Charlie
