We have all at one time or another tried to keep an insect as a pet. Wrote this for my kids.

                  Long Legged Dan

I found a little cricket and placed
him in a can,
I even gave him a name and
called him Long Legged Dan.
I picked lots of grass
for him to eat,
and dandelions for his
afternoon treat.
But after about an
hour or two,
I noticed old Dan was
feeling quite blue.
He was missing his freedom
and feeling homesick,
so I turned him loose and
he jumped on a stick.
I felt kinda sad
but tried not to cry,
then Dan hopped away
as I waved goodbye.

My experience with much different. We would put them in a bottle with the top screwed on tight full nail holes to let the air in. Feeding the critters was not on our minds. Shortly, whatever we had in the jar would die. There was no funeral, we would just dump them out.
