Catching A Sweetfish
Choi Paul Yearn
I, like a sweetfish,
trace back against a river of 40 years.
The naval LST vessels
in the sea that the sea gulls were flying over
exercise their landing operations at the port,
and a stream flows as glasses reflecting the sun,
glimmering above the silver sands under the water.
The crowds of the sweetfish
are going up against the flow,
moving swiftly their bodies.
The naked children pursue the sweetfish.
When they hit the water with bars,
like glass it has been broken into pieces,
the sweetfish rise up onto the surface of water
showing their white bellies.
A white big snake on the sunny hill
crawls through grasses, above the spot,
and the bus runs, like a lizard jumping over it.
And even a grown-up boy
catches the sweetfish, wetting his pants in water
in a river of old memory.
