GONE TO WAR
by Margaret A. Gatchel
Her son has gone to war today.
He is still her little boy.
Her valentine maker,
Her little league player,
He’s her bouncing bundle of joy.
“Why are you going, son?” she asked,
“What need is there for you?”
“Now, just stay right here, by my side,
Until this war is through”
Her son wrote her the other day,
“I need to be brave and strong.
Don’t worry so about me, Mom,
I’m sure it won’t take long.”
Her son came home just last week.
They say she should be proud.
She hugged the flag against her heart
When, they lowered him, into the ground.
Why did he go? She asked him not,
Yet, she already knew.
Her son was among many other’s sons.
They had the ultimate job to do.
She received a letter the other day,
It said that he was so brave.
He took the grenade, in his chest
So that his men, could all, be saved.
The Purple Heart they gave to him,
The greatest honor, it’s true .
Yet, she guessed, he would have brushed it off,
Then say, “It’s what any man would do.”
My grandson called the other day,
Nan, I am joining up, today.
She slowly sat, then drew in a deep breath,
Yes…, her son would have wanted it that way.
He had taught, his own little boy,
To stand up for what was right,
She now recalled her saying such words
To her long ago, baby boy.
