What Is Love

what is love
what does it say
to have and to hold
forever or a day

is love something we learn or
something we do
something we find
just out of the blue

from where does it come
from the heart and the soul
or the head and the mind
or somewhere below

what does love do
if anything at all
some it lifts up
some it lets fall

where does love lead
where will it go
to places unknown
or places we know

for what can love change
in someone you know
can love do that  thing
that you've hoped for so long

can love be weighed
on a scale at last
like a ghost in a jar
that has no mass

love can be found
like a coin on the ground
you wipe off the dirt
then you toss it back down

or put it in your pocket
to be carried around
taken out when it's needed
and then it is found

but love can endure
when all else is gone
the ones we loved
the ones that are gone

love can be all
when all else fails
and nothing is left
but what at first was there.
