THE FASTENING


Like hooks and eyes
we’re small, fiddly;

barely managing to
find each other,
let alone meet.

But our soft buttons
have been pressed;

like with those silk-covered
pearls on a wedding night,
our heat-swollen fingers
fumble, shape-feeling the dark.

And too tight these loops
of restraint: we can never
slip them over or off too easily.

The thread of me catches
on the barb of your smile
as with precision you eye
the fine point of my needle.

No sticky, quick-fix
fluff-collecting velcro
attachment is this;

we’re zipped ‘til our teeth
rust together.
