Bonjour Ron ! Except that the "Hail Britannia!" movement never lets up! (you certainly meant "throes" but the computer steps in to say "throw"???) Oddly enough, both the Japanese and British Isles, hanging on either side of the Euro-Asiatic Continent have done very well for themselves over the ages and are still among the "top dogs" in the international "rat race" but it's going to rain "cats and dogs" what with the multi-nationals (for the wrong reasons) have already gotten their teeth sunk deep into the still politically floundering post-colonial Third World. Yes, the Irish (Catholics) and Scots see farther than the English and Welsh (as their rugby tussels only too well display), but all this back-and-forth on a rather simple decision of an Irish (Catholic & Protestant) border has got the British tied up and teetering in an irradicable mess. The Scottish nationalists want themselves out of Brexit isolation, but the Conservative corporate businesses pull the other way. The Decline and Fall of an Empire takes time, and it's happening right before our eyes: the Royal House in shambles, the Mother of Parliaments a charade (who would have thought they could be so riotous and rowdy?), the Speaker, almost caricatural - the fault lies in the meaninglessness of Democracy itself. Party-politics is not People-politics. Socrates was (as almost all the ancient Greek heritage -still the most formidable of all ages, but for their Peloponnesian Wars, etc.) and is still right: we have passed through all the stages (timuric, oligarchic, democratic) and now therefore await the "dictatorial solution", the coming of the rule by the forces of individuals who have taken over power - witness USA, Russia, Turkey, China, etc. This list is endless if you care to look up recent history. Thankfully so far they stay in power only as far and so long as their minds manage to stay un-warped! Until the next stage of "democracy" which is a used-up tool of power when it works along party lines....

I have not been following British politics except to know that Britain seems to be in the throw of a resurgent "hail Britannia!" movement similar to Donald Trump's attempt to, "make the United States great again." Truly progressive thinking is world thinking like multinational corporations who operate in many countries. Pulling back the world ties as far as government goes, like George Washington suggested, will only lead to more division and hardship for those "left out" of the equation. I think you are alluding to Ireland and Scotland who have benefited from the alliance caused by the European Union.
