Poem Artwork

" True gem of the Hebrides, bathed in the light
Like a midsummer dawning, that follows the night
How I long for the cry, of the seagulls in flight
As they circle high above’ the Dark Island
Oh Isle of my childhood I'm dreaming of thee
As the steamer leaves Oban, and passes Tiree
Soon I'll capture the magic, that lingers for me
When I'm back, once more upon, the Dark Island
"

............................................................................

The rowan tree flourishes in the gorge

wild and windswept, this canyon of unforgettable memories

boyhood dreams, wrapped in timeless nostalgia

I've relished the smorgasbord of time

where the golden eagle soars in majesty

and the red grouse beats its whirring wings

across the velvet of my heart's desires

tender are my thoughts of you

intense as the rush of the crystal waterfall

invigorating as the scent of the purple heather

restless my spirit, roams the silver machar beach

the scent of the tangled seaweed in my lungs

deep, deep within my psyche, I know all is relevant

and if you give your all in love

that's all that counts

swirling metaphysical shapes dance across the bracken

registering your face from a time long ago

even then my force of will was travelling

ever upwards in the insatiable thirst for love and knowledge

driven remorselessly by a spirit indomitable

that knew no fear or brooked adversity

the black faced ewes bleat hantingly in the peat bogs

gilded dragonflies hovering in mesmerizing flight

and I am palpably aware of my own sovereignty

while a corncrake intermittently croaks in the rye

I cross the brook where we happily played

singing thoughts from the past streak by

and I know from within the secret recesses of my soul

I strained every sinew in becoming who I am

Beautiful memoir and portrait that gets me right in the throat, Peter, for the sheer intensity of feeling and capture of the wild ancestral home. And "Dark Island"?? Looks not unlike my beloved Studland (albeit flatter!) around from Poole Harbour - these places are so full of light and luminosity it almost hurts! Actually, come to think of it, also not unlike Tarifa in Southern Spain - Costa de la Luz, my other best favourite beach!! A gem of a place and a gem of a write. Wonderfully imaged, thank you.
