The Safari, she was bristol
At seventy-two feet
Twin Cummins pushed forty-five tons
Of mahogany and teak

I fell in love at her first sight
the purest I had known
This grand lady of the sea
Soon came to be my own

She taught this young man patience
She responded to my touch
We pushed each other’s limits
Sometimes a bit too much

Perhaps it was just petulance
Or maybe youthful greed
I wanted more than she could give
When she no longer filled my needs

Her new masters took her far away
A trip she’d made before
Down the coast through
Panama
Toward the Puerto Rican shore

I believe that they were foolish
And I think she felt betrayed
When they sailed into a hurricane
that sent them to a deep dark grave

I can’t help feeling guilty
not about that careless crew
But for the one I had forsaken
The first grand lady that I knew

Beautiful words. The vintage picture is really intriguing. You write with heart about two of my favorite subjects, ships and the sea.

Sounds like she truly was a very grand lady; and you must miss her terribly. Awesome picture, too.

Poet, this poetic treasure is an absolute wonderful expression of how in one’s urgent quest of youthful ambivalence tries to achieve a better tomorrow, will often forget to hold on to something or someone who originally brought one the happiness and fulfillment through trading up. It’s unfortunate that the volatile crew pushed that magnificent vessel beyond its and their limits. I guess that’s where this expression really would apply, “a man must know his limitation.” Thanks for sharing your work. Take good care and be well.
