Rose's brother Bernie sent me this and other old pictures I had never seen of my family and I believe the litte boy on the left of my father in this picture is me...and so the inspiration for this look back.

Poem Artwork

Back When I Was Five

Things were different back then

Simpler and we all felt more alive

Things were different back then

The year that I turned five

Kids could still play soldiers

Fighting the Germans and the Japanese

There weren’t any video games back then

And only black and white TV’s

Boys and girls obeyed their parents

Marriages seemed to survive

Working with your hands was honest work

Back in the year that I turned five

Sullivan, Disney and Hockey Night in Canada

Ruled the two channels of our day

But only after the vacant lot outside

Became too dark to play

Elvis, Buddy Holly, and Patsy Cline

Made all my sisters jive

I was too young but I remember

‘Back then when I was only five

Yea it was the year I started school

Hilary notebooks and Crayola crayons too

Little brown leather schoolbags

We were told to mind our P’s and Q

Yes I look back with fond memories

And I wonder how we all survived

Through all the memories made and shared

Now that I’ll soon be fifty-five!

When I was five life seemed pretty rough. Yet, as I look back, I can see that it was truly a kinder and gentler life. We used our imagination and neighbors to entertain ourselves, our Moms didn't work outside the home, life was less hectic - absolutely wonderfully terrific!
As Bob Hope said "Thanks for the memories.

You bring my own memories floating back from a time when things were so simple and life was easy for us. Our parents may have had it rough, but they seemed to keep that to themselves and we were totally oblivious to everything outside our small world. Great write!

Yes, and you had to wait for the TV to warm up. lol. We had time. Time to be ourselves and explore the world. Now the world is in our faces and you're right things were simpler then. Excellent. Liz

Times were much simpler then, or was it because we were children that life was so carefree? Anyway, this nostalgic write reminded me of the new song from Bucky Covington "It was a different world."
Enjoy 55, it might be as good as 5 (hey, ya never know)lol.

Those were certainly the days, when it was still ok to play cowboys and indians. And my sister made me dance with her too.

Yes, life was simpler then, children had a wooden piece formed like guns and you could hear only bang-bang-bang-...you dead!
Today the children's guns are real and when you hear a bang someone is really dead.
When somebody says about the good old days always will be there a wet blanket to remember the depression.
But yes, oh those days!
Thanks.

When you were five, you've got the whole world to explore. It was nice, and the time was serene. There were no violence like they have in school nowadays. The kids are going to school in constant fear of being attacked.

When you were five, everything was nice and dandy.

Great treasurable photo. and poem!
