I look around at what is happening in our world today and then remember the social conscience and awareness the teens and young adults of the sixties exhibited by striking out and standing up for their beliefs and I wonder where that fervor went...

Did The Sixties Survive

By: Fee

I drank from the cup of sorrows

Watched the swollen river rise

Overflowing banks with anguish

Disgorging life’s dissenting lies

Seen the battlefields turned

As the shanty-towns burned

The smell that offended the few

But what could we do?

I saw napalm spread justice

By Walter K. doctored spin

Pustules of disease carried

Credited to an intelligence sin

Heard lily scented poli-promises

Covering the smell of manure

Respect beaten into submission

When they couldn’t take anymore

Marched hard, bathed in valour

That true belief bends the reed

Another drink from the cup

Soothing the burnt taste of greed…

I was born in the early sixties. I have a rather idealized vision of that period in my mind. I see it as a period of chaos countered by conviction and a strong sense of virtue all wrapped up in a blanket of peace, love and psychedelics. I wonder how I would view it if I had been an adult at that time.

Just last night I was watching a documentary with this overall issue in mind...there was a way back then to how things were handled - better (who really knows), but in this day in age, would a different way of handling things really be that bad to try? Thanks for sharing this thought provoking write.

This poem reads like an abbreviated history lesson. One we shouldn't forget. Yet, the politicos are more concerned with raising boo-coo $$$ for campaigns than real issues that impact each and every one of us.

To all veterans, your sacrifices and love of your country is truly appreciated by me.

God bless you. Kathy

56.000 brothers and sisters has been marching over the Hill and that White House for forty years, the desert wandering of the Veterans should be coming to an end, they deserve the promised land.

That fervor, I believe, sadly went the way of everything else these days - to the soft, comfy life - to thoughts of only 'Me', to the many material comforts available to many in our modern world.

I think the world would truly be a better place if we could somehow resurrect some of that fervor. A thousand veterans are marching on Washington this week, demanding that they finally get their just benefits. Perhaps it's a start.

And we do live on in many ways that most do not see. The good news is that two million of Iran's population are addicted to drugs which makes that the largest popoulation in any country. Seem's like what killed many of us in the 60's is taking them out also.

those who rebeled politically didn't take as many drugs as most thought. Many in the movement just nodded out and missed it. Didn't wake up if they ever did until twenty years later sad to say. Words of thought here. Lady J

Many from the Sixties did not survive--however, those of us who did, will remember. Your powerful writing is proof, Fe. Thanks for sharing this.

The Sixties DID survive, and remains the conscience of our nation today. But somehow the next generations were given too much, too soon, and too readily - materialism is of what I speak. Sadly, most don't know of our heroes, of past depravation, of past tragedies. Life is good as long as they have malls, iPods, U-Tubes, and credit cards.

Mighty strong and revealing poem, Fee! Bravo...

Excellent word usage, have to ditto Paul on that, and YES the Sixties did survive! When you consider who actually started that stinken war, who was really behind it all, and see it repeated in the world again and again and again, till the nations are so brainwashed by the BS and lies purported by media moguls that are owned by the same mob that started that war........Do the Math!!
On a lighter side, this years fashions are heavily dictated by the sixties, a good gust of wind and HELLO!! ;)
Well done Fee.

Since then the populous has been drugged and dumbed down to such levels that a show of emotion is a royal tabu, I would have to say no, it was crushed....

Yes, the sixties did survive (I was a child of the sixties and seventies); it was a time of turmoil and cry for change; now we are facing this same pattern today. God help us!!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :(

I remember that picture; the lady who was that child in the photograph is now sharing her story with others and is preaching the word of Jesus Christ; saw her on a program last year.

It seems everyone has forgotten but those who lived it and and paid the cost. Most are still paying. Sending you my honest gratitude for doing what you had to do Fee. There was some vibrant music and courageous social reform as well as a war that damaged so many. Good poem Fee.

Fee,

Yes, we did and among the not so pleasant pleasantries my friend. There we good times and sad times, just as there is with each generation and I have the feeling that they will survive also. Outstanding word usage. Peace, Love and Blessings Always, Paul.

Man! I wasn't around, but I remember that b&w picture vividly! I must have been in 8th grade or so and it jumped at me from the pages of my school book in history class. Those from pain torn faces agonized my brain for weeks. We shall never forget our history!! Thanks for this write, Fee.

Did the sixties survive? Yep: look around: the apathy, the anger, the cry for change: those that forget history are condemned to repeat it - well done, Fee.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

I recognize that picture, Felix. Saw it in my Vietnam War history class years ago. There were a lot of good things in the 60's. But there were at least as many bad ones as well. Some people in this country need to be reminded of that. Good job.
