I saw this old fishing boat as we were out on a long drive in the country along the coast of my beloved Nova Scotia, see a lot of them these days...sad.

Poem Artwork

“I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the skies

and all I ask is a tall ship and a star to stare her by…”

John Masefield

The Remains

By: Fee

Like bleached whalebones

That littered once our shore

It’s a glimpse of the past

We seldom see anymore

Spiced by salt in the wood

Just like old fishermen’s lore

The faded name on the hull

Is now threadbare and worn

While her anchor rope hangs

Among the rose bushes thorn

As she sits alone on the banks

Alone and looking so forlorn

Three generations worked her

Hands lovingly scarred by the sea

Until then the big foreign ships

Just couldn’t let her nets be

While the fuel’s rising cost

Brought honest men to their knee

Now the ghosts of her past

Like the wind through her cracks

Still sing the old sea shanties

Along forgotten slipway tracks

And the old timers run out a yarn

As they sit in their old fishing shacks…

Fee,
I love the opening simile - it sets a haunting tone for the rest of the poem. This also has a quaint feel which reveals your love for the sea and your sadness for times gone by. Nicely written with strong imagery. Love and Hugs~

You are right. It is sad, Fee. The same thing is happening on the West Coast. Where has the salmon gone? The way of the cod? Thank you. Love and peace to you,

Regis

It sad...for she had once sailed on glorious journeys and was greatly depended upon; and now it just sits there, abandoned!

I love it when I come across old abandoned adobes, forts and hideouts in the desert SW -- those same thoughts that you so artfully penned above play through my mind. Well Done! Deborah

Fabulous photograph, if that boat could speak, what stories would it tell? To hear and internalize the call of the sea as only a seaman can do....

Be always safe,
Karen

Old ships are never put to rest, always there is a remembrance for them. Even lying alone on the shore, people pass by and consider what might have been on those ships.

Makes me wonder what stories that old boat could tell. You've painted wonderful imagery with your words, Fee, albeit a bit sad.

So very sad, and so very well penned, my friend. Far too many ghosts of glorious times now past, on both land and sea, these days.

Fee,
Haunting tale, my friend. A boat once vibrant with noise, with men working, joking, laughing, now in tomblike silence. Yes, its sad. Amazing imagery in this poem, Fee. Excellent as I've come to expect from you.

Huggs and Blessings,
~Linda

Tucked at bay near the grasses which sway
like an ole memory of her reserve
her bounty no more to sail the waves of this sea
a crest of her bow broken and batter leaving her ore to no more ancor the sea....
I Love The Picture Fee & the lovely poem
