In dark rooms of grief you stumble

Groping almost blindly in the blur

Of those misty tainted memories

You can’t quite remember anymore

Mind-snaps of long ago younger days

Dreams shared throughout the years

Even man sized super absorbent tissues

Can’t digest all the free fall tears

The obituaries and eulogies are written

Try to sum up a live in just a page

The organist plays and heads are bowed

Still you can’t help feel a hint of rage

The holy man stands tall before you

Celebration of life is why we’re here

He sends the spirit off to open arms

And hopes someone’s waiting there

There’s reception lines and holy cards

Flowers and donations to the sick

Another casserole and a pot of soup

That will surely do the trick

Friends and strangers open arms to you

Grief has no containing picket fence

We all must someday say goodbye

And our hearts have no defense

Finally the doors are locked and bolted

The last candle puffed to sleep

Lay your weary head down on a pillow

Now only the walls can hear you weep…
