I don't know how many of you will remember these old girls, they could burn either wood, stove oil or coal. They were as important to the social life of a family as all the TV's, Video Players, WII's etc put together so this is my tribute to a now long gone well remembered friend...

Poem Artwork

The Enterpize Range

No...it wasn’t just a stove back then

If shecould talk  ohthe stories she’d tell

If you care to take the time to listen

Her old wood box I’ll fill

You see she was a source of heat

On a cold winter’s snow day

She made a fine pot of steeped tea

When the kids were at play

A water heater for bath-time

Letting the flame go out was a crime

She was all the aromas of Christmas

And a welcome sight rain or shine

An oven for Mom’s sweet baking

On top a hot pot of soup or a stew

Bread rising in the warming oven

Behind her a place for Dad’s brew

Oh yes, she could be fickle and ornery

And often cursed at a fair bit

She could smoke out the whole house

Throwing a little hissy fit

She overheard many an announcement

Some were good and some were bad

And she appreciated lots of good music

From the kitchen parties we had

Now today there’s electric and microwaves

Convection ovens and the likes

But that old Enterprize was part of our family

Loved by old folks, parents and tykes…

My grama had one of these. This poem takes me back a ways. Delightful! I think you can still find these in old junk yards and in the bush, hauled out there by a just as old tractor. As for old techno devices, well we ship them to China where they extract the gold and titanium and such and make mountains out of the rest of them. Hm... a mountain of hard drives and keyboards, doesn't sound pretty. Hugs, J'nia

Fee,
I like the casual tone you set with this poem. Makes me want to cuddle with a mug of hot chocolate. Very cozy:)

Felix, I am not familiar with this type of stove -- but my paternal grandparents had a wood stove in their kitchen that I recall fondly -- it is interesting that all of the outdated things had a personality, character -- while none of the techno devices possess any -- they are all cold devices we employ, nothing more, strictly utile -- a write that leaves me with a warm fuzzy feeling -- peace and love -- Jon Michael

Oh I remember--my grandmother's house. The stove was put in the basement when she got a new range. Summers were so hot and she put food away for the winter. What wonderful smells in that house. The basement stayed cool and that's where she canned. Boy, did that thing put off the heat. I liked the warmer drawer up top. They stand today as strong as ever. Great poem. Thanks for bringing back fond memories!

Ah Fee, you brought me back to my Aunt Mary Catherine Veronica's kitchen when I was a child, and indeed until I was nearly an adult. She had one of those in her kitchen, and it was a great source of comfort to all of us for many reasons. Good job, as usual. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Hugs,
Anna

oh my..This is one I have to have my Mom read,,I think of the stories she told me as she grew up on a farm in northern MN...one that Charles Linberg's Grandfather worked as well. Such memories..heating rocks for warmth at their feet etc., also reminds me that she made a tape that she gave me years ago for the Grandchildren to know the history...I have never listened to it,,you have inspired me to do so....wonderful write!

Christine

Thanks for the memories, in those times when electricity wasn't a granted feature, that one was the center of the family dwellings in winter's cold nights, when even distaste couldn't get people apart from each other.
My grandma's one could crack a minute notice the most tasteful cookies a child could dream.
Yes, that was another times, and better I must say.

I love nostalgic old things from those 'good old days,' and nostalgic pieces about them, and this is a wondrous one, my friend.
