Funny how a picture can trigger emotions and feelings that even seeing the actual person can not trigger...

Poem Artwork

Just a Black and White Snapshot

Just a black and white snapshot

Now long wrinkled with age

One corner feebly clinging

to that old picture album’s page

There’s a girl not yet a woman

A boy who thinks he’s a man

In front of our rusty old Falcon

the one with the leaky oil pan

That house in the background

was my Mom’s and Dad’s

the clothes that we’re wearing

were just yesterday’s fads

A war was raging in Vietnam

that we could watch on TV

A little baby girl was born

they said looked like me

There were judges and lawyers

when our world fell apart

You got custody of our baby

but she kept a piece of my heart

Just a black and white snapshot

like me wrinkled with age

Took me back through the years

to that day and that page

There is much to be both hidden and discovered in the shadows of black and white... A lovely but bittersweet piece of writing...

Felix, very capturing and sentimental. In one minute your whole life played like a movie in my mind. I felt like I wanted to hug you and comfort you ... :)

Memmories are like that. Both good and bad. Heartfelt write. LadyJ

ps. I've owned three 1960 ford falcons, and a 60 something falcon with a toreno body in my day so they are real familar to me. By the time they were in the 70's you had to always put plywood on the back floor boards to keep the kids feet from falling through.

Awesome, Darlin. I think this is one of your very, VERY bests. It wrings the gut with such sudden-felt emotion that is as objective as it is sharply stabbing. There is always so much deep and yet unselfconscious, un-self-aware sincerity in your nostalgic cameos; there is never any sense of wallowing in self-pity - just telling it like it is. And that's what's so moving and engages the reader completely. Your juxtaposition of the young-ness of the years, the pram-faced adulthood entered into with marriage and babies (to which I can heartily relate) and the very sobering world of The Law makes for gripping reading. Just so hard how these things pan out, when the individuals involved are often still reeling from the actual events and don't for themselves want life to be so hard-edged and final. You've really captured me with the whirlwind experiences you speak of here... as you say, trigged all in one moment from that innocent old snapshot. Love this one, Pops. xx

Note: The first car I ever drove and the car I also took my driver's test on was a '64 Ford Falcon just like the one in the picture. I loved that car and still have a 1/32 replica of it sitting on my bookcase.

Mementos that cannot be taken away, they are yours and only yours, glued on a yellowing old page left behind but, that's yours, only yours.
