“I Got You Babe…”

By: Felix L. Perry

The old man sat on the edge of the park bench

Rheumy eyes plagued by cataracts stared down

Shaky hands tried to hold the newspaper steady

Pretending to read blurred words with a frown

A thousand miles away an old lady sits on a veranda

Of an old converted Victorian Mansion up on a hill

A sign above the door reads Serenity Senior’s Villa

Soon the nurse will be by to give her a happy pill

Old lady hummed a song sitting there reminiscing

An old Sonny and Cher tune from years almost forgot

In her fading memories she could only recall one line

“love won’t pay the rent… at least I’m sure of all the things I got…”

Old man eyes close and he hears a voice singing

Lips turn to a smile that for so long he couldn’t find

The last of his life seeps serenely out of his aged body

“I got you babe…I got you babe” last thing on his mind

The passing nurse takes her pulse and calls the code in

In her last moment the old lady smiles in blessed serenity

The nurse wonders at the old ladies’ outstretched hand

As if she ‘d reached out for her lover in eternity…

Old man lays his paper aside, his mind wanders

A summer night on a beach so many years ago

He’d promised her someday they’d be together

Made love one more time beneath the stars aglow

Children and grandchildren gather by two graves sites

All wonder at their loved ones unexplained last request

As they laid roses and tears on the two fresh dug graves

Below twin markers etched “I got you babe…” they rest

Oh Fee, this is so beautiful as one reaches out to the other through time and space. Two lovers separated in life only to be joined in death to spend eternity...

Be always safe,
Karen

Oh yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.... A most compelling and heart-tingling tale that has more than a tinge of reality about it, dear Felix... in fact, reckon I know of at least two couples who kinda fit this bill to a beautiful T. This is striking because it plays on the contemporary with your choice of lyric, and yet is wonderfully nostalgic given the supposed age of your subjects; to me this speaks powerfully of how the language and music of love translates through ages and stages and connects with the human heart timelessly and eternally. The essence of true love is the instinctual knowing that forever and completey "I got You, Babe!" Bittersweetness resonates through each line of this well-structured poem. As always, wholly felt. Lovely work, thank you. xx

A smile on your face, a song on you lips and love in your heart. It doesn't get much better than that. Wonderful thoughts, well penned. Dick

Beautiful, still each is filled with love for each other - to the end. This reminds me of the story "The Notebook." What a wondeful legacy to those who witnessed and were blest to have known two such loving people (that's what I want to hear when I die.)

God bless you,
Kathy

Now, who says that love and romance are dead? Who said that getting old would make us forgetful of how it was?
No sad writing here, just a sweet sweet remembrance. Thanks li'l brother.
