New year's day, early, dark. No one else on the road. The town felt gloomy. But, it turns out, it wasn't the town and, happily, the mood didn't - couldn't - last.
T’Was The Day After
Early mourn after New Year’s The town seemed all brown Like a person who partied And awoke with a frown
I bought milk and a paper And while I was driving Noticed lights in the windows The town gently reviving
The mood that I drove with Was not truth or parable Just a normal cold day Dark but really quite bearable
So the guy in the red suit Is gone for a year So too champagne And free flowing beer
The glint of the sun That reflects off Rainier Sends enough cheer to last for The rest of my year
The morning after can be refreshing after all, like your poem. Once drove around Rainier the day after Thanksgiving on ice… Scary!
Made me remember the New Year's Day that I drove along Skyline Drive in the San Francisco Peninsula and noted several places where fresh skid marks showed where cars drove off the curvy road. I wondered if the drunks had had their reverie rudely interrupted by skidding off the road and down into some ravine to a sunny California morning wondering what in the hell happened.
Sounds a beautiful little Washington town in the shadow of Mt Rainier,
a place like so many others on the day after New Years...putting a smile on the face of all that read this post...-e-
