blame the
fire at Shiloh,
a soothsayer's
tent, friend and foe,

a firebrand
dilated upon
her sagacity and
affections, a farm
woman's vent,

the Native
American horse
bred to Grey Eagle,
45,000 pounds of corn,
49,000 pounds of hay, stoves,
forges, cauldrons, Book of Shadows,
color lavender, diaries and letters confiscated,

short, secure
supply route known
as the Cracker Line, foraging
she ate pussy, glut in the religious
book market, literary rape of the witch
by the quartermaster chaplain of the brigade,
later he contracted lockjaw from stepping on
my alchemical rusty nail, his parishioners walked
behind the horse-drawn hearse, horse's ass tail in
a braid, his tetanus skull can go to burn in hell!

yesterday, the
holy sabbath, she
had her fortune told,
the story of the preacher
and the whore's gold would
send her to the stake for refusing
to conform and naming confidential
sources, an artist wished to depict her
horses, since expired from the Civil War
times, such an illustration to inspire a poet
and her endurance, rebellion rhymes cloaked
in allegory,

she built
an altar circle
from a debris of
broken wagons in
a group of oaks, ring
of fire she tells the story,
dead horses at her feet, how
it felt to cleanse a battlefield tilled,
turning the soil over from evil forces
for the planting of potatoes, determined
to tear off the masks of hypocrisy and denial
of those who suffer from survivor's guilt, the
phantoms in a blood-stained period, she lit the
match, f***ed the farm woman, second coming
of hectare, revival tarp, her bible Farmer's Almanac,
wild pot in the burlap sack, blame the fire at Shiloh...all
that she has rebuilt...I wrote the most popular verse of the
lesbian confederacy,"oiling the hames hanging in Robert E.
Lee's horsebarn"...

I...

... can't believe i haven't already reviewed this one, Sage! How whoopsadaisy of me... but I'm glad I'm doing so right now cos of how it sends quivers all across me bow strings with all the references herein... firstly the horse thing, after all my Ancients allusions in my Dead Horse Point pome; then secondly, the scenario you paint reminds me of vivid enactments and depictions in the Todd Haynes movie "I'm Not There" (have you seen it??) which I watched this Saturday past: based on the life of Bob Dylan, at one point he visits a Halloween event in a weird kinda place in Pat Garrett-land - surely around New Mexico somewhere. BTW, Cate Blanchett plays Dylan absolutely wonderfully - she has his supposed postures and mannerisms off to a T! Sorry, I digress, but your writing always causes my mind to fly-wheel off into many directions all at once. I love your wild west style of magic realism, Sage... totally SURREAL and yet pepppered with such acute historical fict-fact and believable measurements. You are indeed Storyteller Extraordinaire... and shame I wasn't within sarsaparilla-swillin distance when I rocked on down from Telluride last February! That would have bin something to write home about! Perhaps another time...!! :)) xx

Noticed that the stanzas look like licks of flame. I just posted a poem shaped like a circle. :-) As always, a pleasure and education to read your work, Sage.

Ah, red hot n country, your erotic verse is a revisionist western, cinematic and very intense. Nothing prudish here, it's from the horse's mouth, saddle sore ladies of the southwest.

Good to see you rounding up the ponies again, Sage!

Thank you for this, Sage, an episode I neglected in my excursions
into the Civil War (more's the pity). Again, a powerful piece of writing, which leads me to ask for more. You remind me that there's
still a lot more that this old dog doesn't know; i.e.,
"I wrote the most popular verse of the
lesbian confederacy,"oiling the hames hanging in Robert E.
Lee's horsebarn"...So now I know what hames means. I love
this poem and agree that John had the right word for it:
brilliant. That's you, Sage. -gene.

Sage,
As ever, striking, evocative, provocative in the very best sense...I'm not well up on the history and its parallels you narrate but there's no denying your superb atmosphere and exquisite use of language and image; "...a firebrand dilated upon her sagacity and affections," how fine that is! but my favourite has to be, "he contracted lockjaw from stepping on my alchemical rusty nail" - that's brilliant!
John
