Curtis Ten Elk Caught the Moon

whiskey crock
foretold, and the
Wives know that wise
missing label distills more
than its contents, it's old, wisdom
is gold, set an owl in flight quicker than
a four-tine fork lifts a quail roasted in a
bourbon marinade,

stirring the
cauldron with
the community
blade, visions of
barley grain and
the witch's feather,
the intoxicant brews
over the peat fire, ask
who's unzipped her leather,
she's a woman with a hot need,
the anebriated feather sees double,
the yellow eyes of the owl turn red, palette
tumbles, she stumbles under the spell of
earth bourbon,

Curtis Ten Elk
caught the moon,
put the shine to it,
hid it in a brown jug,
called it Sundance Wives,
those who drink it instantly
recall Buford Pusser in Walking
Tall,

can't buy it
at the shopping
mall, secret's in the
Pennsylvania forest,
the woman gets so turned
on early morning, copper coils
on her attic canvas be a lover's still, I
heard her say, "Curtis Ten Elk Caught
the Moon",  tosses it way back in her throat
and says my name, her wet canvas comes to
life under the moonshine, she takes another swill,
paints Amish Hill, horsedrawn plow working the till,
sod busts up under a thirsty god,

two women on
on the road traveling
the distance between
the moon and coyote traps
throw the three-tine fork to spring
the trap, bright Light comes out of the
woods, Elk freezes caught in their headlights,
antlers dripping with velvet, John Fogerty and the
old man down the road, I heard them say "Curtis
Ten Elk Caught the Moon,"

yea, Curtis Ten
Elk Caught the Moon.
whiskey crock foretold,
and the Wives know that
wise missing label distills
more than its contents, it's old,
wisdom is gold, Curtis Ten Elk
Caught the Moon.

Curtis Ten
Elk Caught the
Moon.

Fascinating, captivating and good to the last drop. I'm with Dayvid on your Fogerty insert. Perfectly placed. Patrick

Another wonderfully tantalizing write Sage! Fogerty's "old man down the road" is a nice touch!

Look Away Silence by Edward Patterson

Martin Powers wanted an ironing board for Christmas. Instead, he got . . . Matthew Kieler, a non-returnable gift, but a gift that kept on giving. A powerful tale of survival, compassion and unapologetic love in the time of AIDS.

A (shockingly) truthful autobiography with elements of fantasy, philosophy, and historical fiction.
