We were kids growing up in the projects of NYC. We had fun just being ourselves.
L - R Sport, Jimmy, John Michael(me), Daryl(best friend)

Poem Artwork

Playing stick ball with a broom stick and a rubber ball.

Making go-carts out of milk crates and roller skates

Taking the subway to the beach or to the city.

We had it all.

Running to the ice cream truck and riding the fenders.

Playing in an empty lot where old cars were stored

Pretending like we were driving like the big kids do

Spending all day at the amusement park

Going out to Central Park or the Bronx Zoo.

Life in the projects of New York City was OK

We steered clear from drug gangs in the street

We made the best of it, we found our way

Living to that New York City beat!

Youth is a wonderful time to share with peers. Those were the good ole days when kids were happy with the little things life had to offer,,,,M I enjoyed the poem...

Your poem reminds me of my childhood in Brooklyn. I loved playing with my egg box, and my dolls lived behind the door of the radiator in the living room of our apartment. I didn't live in the projects, but life was much simpler.

I was raised only 150 miles south of you in Southern Jersey and we always played imaginative games & war games and such too. All of our younger existence's were so much better, I think, than they are now. I don't see kids playing outside anymore, what a loss. -e-

You have given us the essence of how your youthful exuberance overcame the dreary place you lived as you enjoyed the greater NYC area. I especially like how you avoided the drugs and gangs. Love how you included Sport as part of your best friends. Hope you didn't pick on him too much. ;-)

Between 7 and 12 I lived in the slum district of a large industrial city and had similar experiences as a result. Also avoided hanging out with the gangs and bullies that seemed to populate the place. But it was easy to know who the good kids were and hang out with them. I always looked out for and protected kids who were bullied.

It seems that the kids today either sit in front of a TV, a computer, play on cell phones, or play video games. I know it was a different time for us, but I can't help feeling that kids today are missing out on imaginative fun, and just exploring the world around them.
