I look out the window and all I see
Is the darkness closing in on me -
I feel the rain reaching down,
Tendrils of mercy without sound
Clinging to the pane,
Grasping and slipping slowly down the glass,
Slipping so slowly, unable to go back.
The murkiness dampens my spirit,
An emptiness dripping in my soul,
A hollow pain I cannot explain.
There’s no turning back…no changing the past -
The simplest things in life - a battlefield,
A morbid scene unfolding within as we struggle
Against the obstacles we’ve created…
Shoots trampled underfoot (does it matter?) -
Decaying infancy shrouded, the winding sheet
Pulled taut over bones not yet formed,
Shaping them now…
Shaping them as the rain furrows the ground,
Binding the bones in rigid, desperate patterns,
Binding and shaping them as our battles
Bind and shape us
But without the mercy of the rain…
Or of the darkness.
