Tonight when the quiet of nightfall descends
And the only noise I hear is the passing cars on Highway 81
The birds so declarative in daytime are now a rest in homes of twig and grass
And the children have been called to supper and bedtime rituals
Tonight I can hear my thoughts
Some are nice, some brilliant, some quite dysfunctional
and yet they are mine, all mine
unique in this universe and for that matter likely any universe
today I thought what if I won the lottery
I spent money here and there making people smile and wondered
Do they smile for me or my money?
I went fishing instead of answering my question.
All I thought was dang why can’t I,
Get that bobber right there? That’s where they are!
I did get 5 small fish, and cleaned them,
on my black, metal back-yard table.
My grandkids whined and cried because
I went fishing while they were in school, I smiled
I enjoyed the quiet, but I will take them next time,
Just to keep the peace, and to be a good grandma.
Tonight I contemplate the reasons I am home alone
Alone in my thoughts, anyway, the cat has made his presence known
And the fish is blowing bubbles, he wants food
And the bunnies are hopping in their hutch.
But as for other humans I am alone, and it disturbs
The quiet, disturbs my evening, making me sad
I do not like it, what some call serene, I call maddening
I want humans to be here sharing my space.
Its been over a year since I had a companion
to share this space with, to share my thoughts with
and I love to dream, and share those dreams
and now am wondering if I will ever find such a friend again.
i'm sure you will Sandi cause you're for real. remember, we find that which we seek. how lucky to have grandkids who even want to go fishing! this piece of writing here, poem, is really lovely and heartfelt. you were one of my first reviewers way back. remember? cheers
Peace is only a state of mind as you so well put it. Thank You for sharing a small piece of a peaceful day. I found the ending sad but entirely vigorating. Bless You, Paul.
As long as you write poetry like this you will have many friends here in the den, that can relate to what is happening to you. We all need a good hug now and then and a willing ear to hear about our dreams.
