I could do that job

went
to a wake last night
dear friends mother
sat behind her rubbed her back
followed her gaze
it was her mama
and she said
she looks so good
just looks like she could just
get right up
watched the grandkids
lining up the ache
so real as to be
palpable in the air
averted eyes
averted hearts
broken
from
death
taking a constant
a real touch stone in their lives
sharp intakes of breath
filled the room tiny sobs echoed
grief
and I remembered wailers
from my old bible studying days
used to hire wailers for funerals
good criers, screamers, paid grief show-ers
the louder the better
the more the richer
and I thought
I could do that job
I wanted to wail for my friends
I’d do it for free
just sit right outside there
on the floor
and just wail their pain
pull my hair and act the crazy
stir up a cacophony of grief
I could do that
take it to heart and scream
their anguish
let the world know
that
here lies one loved Meme
one heart that touched and loved
so
many
my dear friends
mama

I could do that job

Yes you could do it, you have the compassion...you also have the ability to write about it so well, that it touches our very soul...

don't be wailing for me...when i go - i'm celebrating! want you to smile and say - she's finally going home!
Heartfelt poem on the emotions of grief, and that is one uncomfortable emotion for those left behind...the wailing truely is for them...

Dear Josephine, The write was excellent. But as far as the job goes, not for me. I do not go to wakes, or funerals.

After reading this I could join you, I've felt that way so many times, but in our society we stifle grief. Good write, Lady J.
