for a friend and a survivor

Poem Artwork
It was all too much to bear,
(For me) staring out across the valley
At you supplicating earnestly for more
Of life to share, for more time to
Live, to express freely,

And in your
Own quirky way
Owning another season
Guaranteed free from defects
(Endemic to HUMAN frailty)
Was what I cried fervently

Another chance
For you (perhaps)
At making some sense
Of all that would be pulled,
Eventually, from the wreckage
Of what'd forced you down along the
Edges of life’s fragile looking glass

Being thankful for
The real friendships;
Those few you cuddled in your
Heart when living got serious, or when
You’d reached wits end alone again, somehow
Confiding in the trustable, and now accepting that what
You’d always struggled to believe in was all that made sense

And all you purposed
To hear was [a wise voice]
Encouraging you to walk this way,
Or that way, telling you to listen only to
Those elect who drank from the purest streams,
Reminding you to give thanks for having NOT been born in the
Days of antiquity when people suffering (with the invisible)
Were often left to perish on windswept crags

TO ACCEPT ONE ON THEIR OWN TERMS, WHEN THEY'RE DOING IT THEIR OWN WAY...CAN BE HARD. BUT THEN, GIVING OF ONE'S SELF TO EMBRACE WHAT THEY DON'T FULLY UNDERSTAND OR AGREE WITH IS WHAT 'FRIENDSHIP' IS REALLY ALL ABOUT. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

It took a beautiful heart to write this. It captivated me and pulled me right into it. I'm so glad your friend is a surviver.

I am humbled by the last lines comparing the past to the present; something in them makes me feel the sadness of those times passed--of how people suffered to death by the simplest illnesses. The whole of this writing seems to give a feeling of "See ... I told you so", as I read it. It seems as though someone just would not listen and then when stricken by something forceful enough, realization sets in, temporarily. Aggravation from those occurrences build over time, but you never gave up hope. Eventually, they become wise enough, and your happiness in them grows; however, still, with a sadness of the time lost to ignorance. That is my take on it. The writing is very interesting, either way. Thanks for sharing, Richard. I enjoyed trying to understand this one.

Beautifully written, Richard. I like the way you ended this tribute. A great sense of belonging to something bigger - history and lives lived - comes from those lines. Thank you for sharing this. Love and Hugs,
Sheila

Your love and compassion heals, Sir Richard. What a gift you are to this planet and especially to those you touch with life through use of understanding and empathy in your work. Thank you, again, for being such an example of how giving of ourselves can ease suffering.
Love, Lynnie

It's good to see you posting poetry again, Richard, I've missed you and your thoughts and words. This work stirs and moves..."when living got serious"...how well I can relate to that and to the entire piece. This is fine indeed.
