Poem Artwork
The reality was inconceivable. Something terrible had happened. Just moments before the sunlight had disappeared in one deafening roar. The environment was now choked with dust. Around us metallic sounds ground harshly as massive steel girders shifted under countless tons of concrete.
.
Aside from our lives
All we had come to trust in
Crumbled suddenly
.
Groans echoed through the stifled silence as the innocent realized their fate. Despairing now in a fog of feelings; senses sharpened (sometime later) when a small beam of light began dancing in ghostly shafts between the rocks. Faintly we heard a man’s muffled voice crying out: “Are there any survivors?” Then there was weeping.
.
With one terse question,
When all seemed helpless and lost,
Hope unified us
.
“We’re in here,” some cried. As we would come to discover in days following; we were the unwitting recipients of failed peace talks, treachery, and malevolent technology. False promises, treasonist deceivers, and governments, rife of corruption, had cruelly rewritten the preferred course of history.
.
Who could understand
Such devastation rendered
In one moments time?

A brilliantly written allegory of the stark reality of war perpetrated by the guilty and suffered by the innocent.

With riveting words you have described what it is like to be on the receiving end of war. "In one moments' time," lives can be changed forever. You made me think about those in Aleppo who have been subjected to bombing for months and so many had to leave and are now unwelcome refugees in safer, but alien environments, wishing that they can go back home. But to what? All destroyed.

In a larger sense, you are describing a global event. A third world war that some would engage in to protect their pride while ignoring human dignity and right to live. Let us hope that it doesn't come to that. Whenever I hear politicians saber rattling to get folks rallied up around them, I think about victims, not about the glory of victory.

he whose speed of understanding allows his to do this in one moment's time. . . a superman? No. but one who flows with all the curves and turns of the river named 'life.' Cheers, alex

The misery continues. Does anyone really know why? A deft prose poem.

Revelation abounds in this poignant, yet simple event. We sometimes forget it only takes one capricious move on the red button to create innumerable experiences such as you written here.

Stark, harsh, real, and very effective, Richard. Thank you for sharing. Love and peace to you,
