Notwithstanding the cry for unity...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

Democrats say government will make you smarter, taller, richer, and remove the crabgrass on your lawn. Republicans say government doesn’t work, and then they get elected and prove it.

Poem Artwork
..."The future flower lies folded in the bud,
Its beauty, color, fragrance, and graceful form
carefully shrouded in that tiny cell till
time and circumstance, and sun and shower,
expand the embryo blossom- and it bursts
its narrow cerements, lifts it’s blushing head,
rejoicing in the light and dew of heaven.
But if the cankerworm lies coiled around
the heart of the bud, the summer sun and dew
visit in vain the seared and blighted flower"...
.
It’s getting worse … these
problems besetting us, these
mountains confronting us, a world
of challenges fraught with all distressing
apprehensions corrupting intent…
Americans become
their best (and worst) by choice,
regardless of the growing reluctance to
denounce inept ideas threaded with dubiety
.
We are a country of
Far rights and far lefts in which
both sides (relentlessly) color their
beliefs – notwithstanding the cry for unity;
one side stands and applauds, the other side
sits and stares, irredeemably div---------ided,
an increasingly agenda-driven tohubohu
fueled with unbelievable hauteur,
sneering down long noses,
hoping someday for self-glorification;
government becoming more like gooey starch in
Grandma’s pudding, than an effectively flowing stream…
.
At times I tingle
with apprehension
at the notion of being me…
(encapsulated in a dying body,
inhabited by an everlasting spirit,
incarcerated in a society pregnant with
lunacy, hatred, and myopic self-centeredness)
…a kind of alphabet sculptor scratching SOS in
the sand just before another wave crashes

very thoughtfully written, and without a doubt, an expression of the unspoken and unshared thoughts and feelings of countless men, women and children in these days. As I slowly read it, and contemplated each well chosen word, it gave me a chill at how hopeless this world seems without Jesus Christ. And it IS hopeless, just like your last stanza ends, at least until we remember that the Lord God is still on His Throne, and daily shaping people's hearts, and world events towards His predicted and sure Consummation.
I am always provoked by your poems to use all my gray matter when enjoying your writes. Thank you. Never stop writing.

WE ARE IN THE 'END-TIMES' RICHARD. WE CAN EXPECT ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING TO HAPPEN. WE MUST REMAIN PRAYERFUL, AND HAVE THE FAITH TO CONTINUOUSLY CLAIM THE BLOOD OF JESUS WHICH IS THE ONLY THING STANDING BETWEEN US AND HELL. WE ARE NOT ALONE, GOD SEES ALL AND HE IS WITH US. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

when you live on top of a hill you can be a self-appointed king of the mountain. At the same time, you need to regularly climb down for provision. . . this great country people's ultimate priority is to realize that the world has been changed much faster than it seems from the height of the mountain, and it is the right time to build-up the foot of it over again in order not to fall down from there. A spicy piece, as always. Cheers, alex

After looking up like three words, my education for the day, I actually get it and can for the most part agree. Yes, short-sighted self-centeredness seems to be becoming the norm in our world. I have to wonder if I am one of those experiencing it. You always make me think, Richard, even if I don't "get it" all the time. -e-

You write politically charged poetry very well. I especially like your lead in.

I once read Plato's, The Republic, where he so eloquently described all forms of government. For government seemed to be a necessity for the ancient Greeks and it still is. What is the best kind of government is still debated and always has been. You state that we are a country of far left and far right. It is no more so today than it was when the country was formed with the loyalist and the federalist at each other's throats. That's why the pendulum swings back and forth. The heavy center decides, not the fringes. We come together when a real peril comes along.

Your apprehension is no doubt shared by many; that is the kind of world that we live in nowadays. It's every one for him/herself, not in a self-centered way but as a way to climb out of the morass with one's integrity intact. An interesting write. John

Many images that are relevant, with for some of us, the only answer is to live a spartan life, finding satisfaction in sharing political understandings with one's mate, whether of the same ideology or not. I only wish more conscious people would accept the option to live away from the concentrated BS that concentrates on the major cities.

Your grandma's pudding must have been really bad. Did it have cankerworms hiding inside? I love the imagery.

This poem is, as "they" say, right on. I have been a conservative all of my life. I disdain the notion that government is the end to all problems. I know government, in all likelihood, makes matters so much worse. When the government crowd(mob) wants us to turn over our thought process to them, it is mind blogging. On the other hand the conservatives, when they give too much freedom to the populace there can be real and troubling times ahead. What, if anything, is the solution? Is it quite impossible to combine all the "good" values of each party and make one united, strong party? A party which will give us godspeed toward some kind of utopia for the future. Personalty I don't see that happening, but I sure would like to see it happen.
