Strength of Character...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

A devolving society can see us, drive us, and label us - as individuals - in multifarious ways. A ‘sound mind’, however, beholds itself through a different lens than public opinion, and perseveres in the strength of ONE.

Poem Artwork
(In my experiences I’ve
Noticed it often), when after
Thinking you’ve at last arrived, and,
After trusting your insights are original
With keen insight, meaning, and uniqueness,
That you finally chance to reach out to examine
Yourself in the mirror of public perception, only to
Recoil aghast at what you see reflected back…
.
“That’s NOT who I am,” you contend
.
“It’s how society sees you,” the mirror laughs
.
Distraught, you ruffle, fluff, and flounce,
Trying to find a less traumatizing
Angle to view yourself from,
Unsure (now) about how you’re being seen,
Unsure (now) about being accepted,
Unsure about being respected,
Unsure, too, about,
DRAT, damn
Unsure
Now.... In fear,
Desperation, or both, a
Surge of indignation begins ‘rousing
Ways to sublimate the vinegar of perception -
To make the world’s twisted view of you more palatable -
Because (you’ve convinced yourself that) the person
You’re becoming, makes (at least) some sense
To you, so why not to others...
.
P…A…U…S…E…
.
THANKFULLY… a sound mind
Separates from
This ruck and muckle,
From all the social labels,
From the gossip of imbeciles,
From voices whispering hatred,
From all jealous misinterpretations,
From the chains being relevant impute,
From the naysayers relentless stare and blab,
As one clambers, struggling through many
Rigors of the storm in search of hitherto
Unwritten, accurately self-satisfying,
Insights someone else may resonate with
.
While all the while
Clearly understanding
That being the best you can be
Is not a path for the rickety, and that
STRENGTH of CHARACTER is loath to the sapless,
And that sustainable joy is as fickle as Alaskan weather,
(But it still bubbles up when you least expect it)
.
Acquiring slowly,
(In time), the idea that all
Are somewhat sincere in their views,
And that success and acceptance from others
Will fail as primary requisites in the journey,
Because we must have peace within,
There must be lastingness,
There must be gifts,
(Attended to and shared)
There must be daily obedience,
There must be resolve, and focus, and
Clear comprehension of the Creator’s love, and how,
In relationship with Him, an unflagging purpose is given
That rises up and resounds more genuinely (in what you do)
Than the forever unappeasable drivel of mainstream pabulum...

A strong character has to be built and nurtured over time. Most people refuse to bother and are willing to waste their time on meaningless pursuits. But if you are one of the few who believes in the goodness of others and your contribution to humanity, it will not matter what the ignorant think of you. You are who are inside. And no one can belittle your gift or take it away.

following Odin, I'd say 'Pabulum, indeed.' One guy who spent six years in a monastery in Tibet told me that monks and novices there, mostly all of them, are because of the food to survive, not belief; and it's true. Another truth is that in developed countries adults and children are underfed, to say nothing of the developing countries. Now we have what we have, and in most cases it is in vain to talk about how it should be done. . . the train has already passed thru. Reality shows us our mistakes and blunders made in the past to get beans today. The universal logic rules the world, the formula of which is very simple: as you sow you shall mow; that's it. Again, a strong character, once it becomes very strong, destroys itself, but the weak one has a chance to survive thru leaning how to be stronger. For this reason, the unkind people and lesser men have a better perspective ;)) Cheers, alex

A wonderful poem Richard which reminds me that when we took the Creator out of our schools with 10 commandments gone, for many kids, there were no boundaries, there were no rules. Our nation is struggling with generational fear today. We teach our children algebra which 95% of us never use in life but we don't teach them how to love their neighbor or how to enjoy life and play fair. We really don't need more guns or arming each other to the teeth. That will just provoke more fear. We need to teach all children more love and respect for authority so they will hopefully obey the rules that are already in place. We need to teach our teachers to become aware of the student's behaviors that are abnormal and to seek help for these kids so they can vent out their frustrations. Teach love so hate and fear may die. We don't need more walls, we need to teach how to live better lives wherever we may belong. Am I making sense, or am I completely wrong?

As I read this beautiful rendition of how we view ourselves versus how others view us, I recalled reading a small book called, Stigma. Your poem made me think about the LGBTQ population and those who are disabled like me. Perception of those who are considered "different," are often stigmatizing and stereotyped to the point of inability of the individual to view him/her self as valuable to society or have any strength of character at all.

As for your ending, I think strength of character is one who can, with his/her own free will, feel right with the world the way it is and not have the concern or need for some guiding or outside force that justifies this feeling well. We all have that inner strength that comes from eons of struggle to survive. The mere fact that we are here makes us strong.

You always give me so much to ponder on with your decisive poetry.

It's all about knowing oneself and staying true that oneself.

Giving the best of you and receiving the best in others. Only when we have acquired a certain amount of experience, wisdom and Faith, can we step up to the plate and render our own personal authenticity. Thank you for sharing, your a valued poet here. Have a great day

Pabulum, indeed. As you know, my beliefs in the creator differ from many, but the force and influence of the universe's creation is undeniable, and for my convictions, it is there because energy will not be confined. As you point out in your work here, there is "unflagging purpose" to it all... and the "all" is there for us to ponder and hopefully embrace a positive aspect of it for our survival... at least in this iteration of our atoms of life.
