Restore the bridge...

Portrayal 2 - Regarding forgiveness. A family member – who at one time lied, manipulated, and conned others – shows up one day unexpectedly. Outwardly he appears different than he was; a man now reaching out for forgiveness, and wanting to reconnect.

Poem Artwork
How calm and renewed he seems.
A [smooth-soul] speaking sincere Words;
Words conveying brokenness; Words
Imbued with the same kind of
Equanimity a warrior has
Under pressure of
Engagement;
Words
That instance
The rummy soulfulness
Of one inclined [now] to accept
The gifts God bestows other humans
Without lessening, or vilifying them…
.
And ohhhhhh my
How his Words reflect
The honeyed rejoicing
Of someone
Embracing others, now,
With an open inclination to accept
All that would’ve railed once against
An inherent haughtiness…
.
Despite what it seems, sadly,
I can’t help but sense his Words
Being a bitty-bit wobbly,
Like a sailing vessel
Yawing to port,
Seeking an even keel… Still, strangely,
The sincere way he’s speaking
Leaves me sensing he’s
Not the prick
He became years ago;
Irascible, devious, torturing
Everyone with spiteful arrogance;
The self-centered manipulator who would
Do anything to get the upper-hand,
And whose jealousy,
Of another’s endowments,
Was a foul stench to all involved…
.
Even now, as he’s talking,
Acidulous bits of his black-iceberg
Still float in my lakes and down my rivers,
And I can’t help but expect that just
Around the next corner
That cold uncaring façade
Will appear and asphyxiate me…
.
I wonder; is this
[New person] real,
Or is he still pretending
To be someone he’s not, so no one
Will see the burner of SO MANY bridges?
As it is, now, and being a bit shocked
I would even consider it,
Despite all
Fears and biases,
I’ve decided to gingerly
Take hold of the Olive Branch
He’s proffering… and even though
Most in me is screaming
STOP! –
He’s a liar,
A manipulator,
Guard your heart –
I’ll remain amenable as
Time perfectly establishes that
What seems to be transpiring isn’t
Just another of his deplorable agendas…
.
Right up in my face now,
Manifested from a troubled past,
Stands a personality I’ve not known…
If anything good is going to come of this,
We’ll both need to restore the bridge
That once connected us...

The ‘Portrayal’ series will be brief poetiprose insights (good and bad) about family members and a few friends I grew up with. They will also portray some of the actors, artists, musicians, and writers I worked with in college, or professionally, in my 20’s 30’s and 40's. All of these individuals were instrumental in shaping the man I am today.

THIS IS NOT SOMEONE YOU'VE CASUALLY KNOWN...THIS IS FAMILY, YOU'VE LIVED WITH THEM AND YOU KNOW THEM. THERE HAS GOT TO BE SOMETHING THERE THAT WILL LET YOU KNOW WHERE HE IS TRULY COMING FROM AND I CAN ONLY SUGGEST YOU DOING WHAT I KNOW YOU'VE ALREADY DONE...PRAY ABOUT IT. I JUST HEARD A SERMON ABOUT PRAYING FOR THE SPIRIT OF DISCERNMENT...THEN LET GOD LEAD YOU. THE ANSWER WILL COME; IN A DREAM, OR EVEN SOME REVEALING WORD OR ACTION FROM THE INDIVIDUAL. THANKS FOR SHARING, RICHARD. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS.

... And I'm (we are - my siblings and me) still waiting for that one brother to come forward. He did not even attend both my parents' funerals nor has he contributed anything towards the funerals. I think of him often though. Sometimes... the blood is thicker than water, and for some reasons I miss him. Your poem makes me think of this brother of mine.

Quite a subject for a poem. A blowhard is returning to the place he ruled over the same people with a black horse whip attitude to humble himself and ask for forgiveness. Will they reach out and embrace this person? The poem also reaches out to the reader slipping in a few lines giving the reader caution.

I tend to agree with Ron on this one. Words are fine and it is what we do that really makes the person. Relationships within families can be tricky and carry a lot of baggage. Your have explore the possibilities well in this finely wrought poem. Excellent.

You're very descriptive about this family member who has hurt you so many times. For me it would be very hard to accept his new persona as reformed from just his words. I would require more to demonstrate his sincerity.

Fortunately, my family I only have one nephew of that sort.

People are like bridges. Our foundations stay but the outer part get chipped away with time. The older the bridge, the greater amount of trust it requires before we attempt the cross over. I truly understand your view here. Well done Richard, thank you.
