Outside the front door...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

Mama coyote and her pups came to visit again. There are times when the interaction with wild animals is far more inspiring than with humans. Image taken outside the front door.

Poem Artwork
Perhaps ten yards
outside the front door
Mama passes
frequently yipping
her two pups slipping
on the canyon side of the fence
down into the ravine tripping clumsily
chasing June bugs and shadows…
Mama sits there regally
watching me warily
(and them
occasionally)
her ears turned
curiously listening
as I yip and woof
a little like her
hoping to connect
talking gently to avoid
threatening her or the pups
chasing a gray cat now through
dead eucalyptus leaves….
I love that she’s
an outside animal,
as wild as a northern wind,
healthy, watchful, independent,
a furry tube of magnificent muscle
living without hindrance….
Mama coyote passes
frequently yipping
her head cocked curiously
listening as I tell her she's loved...

A wonderful interlude beautifully expressed how animals are tuned to us by our very nature. Intuitively, they are curious, but always watchful, especially for their children, instinctively knowing if someone is a threat or not. Perhaps you're trying to talk her talk works. She comes by often and watches you try.

A beautiful poem! Sometimes connecting with animals, even the wild ones, gives us that peaceful feeling which allows us to sink our souls into another world and forget about the reality for a while. It helps us to relax, as you have described so well in this poem.
