Love gained - Love lost

A retelling of a recent family tragedy...

Poem Artwork
It’d been
many years since
they’d flowed as one,
concealed from levering eyes,
and the endless galling judgments
of embittered men given to destruction…
.
Theirs was
an honest love
that burst
open fragrantly
when it was stirred,
.
And she was to him,
(in those early years) a
vision of unsullied pearls
arrayed on pure black sand,
and he to her a loving protector
keeping at bay all that threatened…
.
And both walked the prototypic paths,
hungry to animate their treasured dreams,
for between them
the purest water flowed, and
in the fortress they’d built, many
memories were [safely hidden] from
the schemes of malefic forces bent on
diminishing loves steadfast bond…
~
Hidden
far above them,
excelling in splendor
and magnificence, a lofty throne
sat on a vast floor of tessellated crystal,
and roundabout, multitudes of ageless angels
assented to the unfeigned beauty of honest love…
Expressed in all purity, these witnesses lauded the giving
of one’s heart to another, in whiteness, sincerity, and purpose.
.
So they forged on in all hope,
[together] through every challenge
placed before them….
.
But the years passed and
their hearts were weighed down
with all the difficulties of this world…
.
And when he
was renounced by her,
a phantom of former self
emerged,
manipulative,
despondent,
embittered,
stubborn, incapable
of intimacy, and hopelessly
given to drugs and an alcoholics intrigues,
a shadow-man creeping his way along defiled paths,
straining to mollify those for whom he had no deference -
a bankrupted idealist accepting that there was little now
to life, other than his failures and wretchedness,
nothing above, nothing below,
nothing at all to live for
nothing but misery
no one to trust
no hope
nil
O
o
.
Her rejection had
shattered him… Years later,
hysteric and brought to his knees,
he finally put the muzzle to his head
and pulled the trigger…
.
Hidden
far above
him, excelling in
eternal magnificence, a
lofty throne sat on a glorious
floor of pure tessellated crystal, and
roundabout this Great Glory, whom no human
eye could behold, ten thousand thousands
of everlasting angels were looking down
and mourning for another soul
who had lost his way…

When true love is gone it is devastating because along with it the trust is gone as well. Some lovers like to drive the other to the deep end. It will be up to the other how he/she would respond to the deadly intention. Some stronger ones will survive the blow while the weaker ones would seek to end his/her own life. It's sad!!!

I enjoy this tale of a poem! Great job, Richard!

I don't believe I have read a finer depiction of pure love than between the couple you describe. I don't know the reason why she decided to leave him, but it may have been something to do with his "idealistic" thoughts and manner that she felt were not grounded enough for her.

In your description of his decline as a result of the loss of her stabilization into the dregs of drugs and alcohol, leading to the final conclusion of suicide, is equally spine tingling to read.

Yet it is unfortunate to have to write about tragedy like writers have going back to Greek tragedies and other classics like Romeo and Juliet. Why we are drawn to tragedies more than triumph, I'm not sure.

Such a paradox of potential here, given so many of us choose the paths less traveled, only to find out at some point, they either betrayed one's trust or begat joys that most others would find difficult to understand. Thus, your wordsmithing here has offered a perspective, a direction and hope that similar experiences with your readers will avail like revelations. Enjoyed the realization that we can often pack away certain aspects of our persona, but ultimately, they are baggage awaiting the inevitable reopening in order to learn or re-learn the message or lesson. Perfectly thought through and totally understood.

Smokes, dark, very dark and stark.
But oh, so real.
One's attitude and mindset do seem to make or break a person in challenging times. Times which come to all.

BTW Beard envy here. :)

Wow. Sadly this happens all too often, We identify totally with the
love that saved us, and when it fails us, we drown in our own waters.
How much emotion was put into this poem dear Richard, only a poet
knows where to go to draw such raw emotions. Well done . Keep the
pen flowing and the mind and heart growing. Its the only way.
You are braving it, for sure. :)
