These lessons learned...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

A crackling beach fire at dusk. The shoreline white and frothy. The sky’s fading pastel colors ushering in the gloaming. Mind and spirit quieting. A time to assess one’s life honestly, and find peace. Composed with TRIOLETS. ABaAabAB

EVALUATION
It’s not progressed the way I thought
This journey once compelling
Despite the strength with which I fought
It’s not progressed the way I thought
And though some projects led to naught
And certain wins were telling
It’s not progressed the way I thought
This journey once compelling
.
CEDING
There comes a time we must concede
When what we’ve done transgresses
No matter how we fight or plead
There comes a time we must concede
In spite of what a spirit freed
In life and love expresses,
There comes a time we must concede
When what we’ve done transgresses
.
LAMENT
I haven’t felt the sun awhile
Its warmth and clear direction
I’ve rambled far too many miles
I haven’t felt the sun awhile
And tho’ abiding many trials
In truth with no exception
I haven’t felt the sun awhile
Its warmth and clear direction
.
REMEMBERING
It’s not the way it felt at first
When I was young and willing
The endless needs and constant thirst
It’s not the way it felt at first
And though my life’s been unrehearsed
At times not worth a shilling
It’s not the way it felt at first
When I was young and willing
.
SYNOPSIS
Despite all grief, these lessons learned
Were worth the price I paid
It’s offered me what’s truly earned
Despite all grief, these lessons learned
And though the world would jilt or spurn
Through battles strength I prayed
Despite all grief, these lessons learned
Were worth the price I paid…
.

I truly enjoyed your life reflections here…
And your uplifting conclusion that

“Despite all grief, these lessons learned
Were worth the price I paid”

Life rarely presents the way we expect when young…
But a Life well lived with unexpected happenings
that we can accept…is a gift that gladdens the Heart…

I LOVE your photo…absolutely stunning!

A wonderful reflection on life's path and it's tangents. Even the form of this meanders in echoed nod to unexpected twists and turns ...I like it a lot.

A blazing fire on the beach at dusk is either
an invitation for a legal citation or the beginning
of a feast. Like your poem, it's all a matter of perspective.
So well crafted.

Interesting poetry form I had not heard of before. I like the way it rambles, yet circles back and reinforces important lines, as though in emphasis. We can lament our mistakes, our choices, and roads not taken, but through quiet reflection we do find that lessons are learned in the time we need to learn them. It may not seem so at first, or even later, but eventually we see the truth and cry and rejoice silently for its appearance at just the right moment, but only if we are listening. Well said and very well written.

A great form of poetry and your talk about your life and the strives that you have gone through.

We all have gone through the ups and downs in life, but the way you have put them into a well-constructed poetic form is truly amazing!

Thank you, Richard!

I really like the naked honesty in this beautifully rhymed piece. Life is quite a lesson and very few people achieve what they set out to do when they were young. It is probably more sane to let go of dreams when they don't materialize rather than keep trying while butting your head against the wall to no avail.

A finely measured and paced poems, with such thoughts worthy of contemplating, lessons learned indeed worthy to be internalized.

You've touched on a principal of both achievement and failure, of principal and guilt: "Despite all grief, these lessons learned
Were worth the price I pain."

Far too many live with the entitlement mentality, obviating the very nature of learning and progressing, i.e., one can't appreciate light without experiencing the dark.

Well crafted verses that render the reader with understanding of what's needed on the part of all of humnity. Well done, Richard.
