My advice to a Curmudgeon...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

When I was younger, he was a vibrant older brother/father figure to me, full of wisdom and kindness and encouragement. But when I met up with him again recently, he’d turned into someone I’d never once expected, an irascible crotchety grump-doodle full of stubborn ideas.

Poem Artwork
He was once
a soul who fathered
such grace and seemliness,
whose once generously edifying
opinions stagger now in the grays of
riddles and pridefully expressed opinions,
and now, too, someone whose contempt
causes him to view another’s faith
with a supercilious eye…
Have life’s struggles,
and being misread, begun
sequestering you from your joys?
Was it all the alcohol and pills?
What’s happened to you?
Getting old is
an act of God’s grace,
but being old shouldn’t distress
any more than the moon’s snowy luminance
as it pirouettes with swaying trees….
.
Senescent or not, heaven’s
rains still refresh, and
the rich moist soil
yields its
musty fragrance
as flowers blossom
and smile and fade in an
unappeasable passing of seasons.
You too (at times) resemble a flower
(in season)
in spite of your
utterly foolish notions,
and the mounting years and
dread uncertainties weighing on you….
.
My advice:

The next time
you’re in nature,
look up… see where
the sunlight filters down
through the higher branches,
there, the Mockingbirds still delight,
with their colorful fire of conjurations,
even as winters snow deepens,
despite how a crotchety old
man’s heart strain’s
through memories
portion of
impermanence….
The intensely aching beauty
you see being just within your grasp
has a heat that burns when you reach for it,
you want it, you always have, but whether it’s yours
(or not) is NOT in your power to understand,
.
Freddie… I still have love for you,
please, turn back towards the Light…

So personal and so pleading. But I'm afraid that Freddie will not return to being lighthearted. The burden of life in old age is something that one has to experience to really understand. I guess it is a time when all the failure in a life comes back to haunt in ways unimaginable earlier. While it affects only some elderly and not others.

You gave a hint, "alcohol and pills," that would indicate some of the reason for his decline.

When I was in West Virginia at my cottage, the neighbor below me was 93 years old. His lawn needed mowing, so I mowed it for him. When I engaged him in conversation, he had nothing good to say about anything. Even complained that when his heir, a niece, I believe, since he had no children, came, she didn't want to listen to the details of what he would give her of his wealth.

He was a very lonely disgruntled man. I moved away not knowing what happened to him. I see the stone and beam mansion overlooking the lake his brother left him has been torn down.

How sad…but Ebenezer Scrooge managed to transform
himself, although he needed three ghosts to convince him…
I truly believe redemption is always within reach,
if the heart is willing…I truly wish this for Freddie…

Poor old Freddie. Not understanding or kind to others, and more so not understanding and kind to oneself. That said, life too can be unkind, to some it seems worse than others, for whatever reason. I feel sorry for Freddie. Who knows what brought him to that state. You advice seems sound, but is easier said than done. May his life circumstances help him out a little so that he can see what needs to be done to make a change for the better.

Your words are so heart felt and so incisive, I will join my prayer to yours, that he one day will open his eyes and see how short life it, to short to be grumpy. Maybe you are the light that God brought forth to him, to show him, what became of that young man that he once mentored . Thank you for sharing Richard, God bless ;)

Words of beauty and warning. Anyone could become like him. Reminds us all to turn toward the light whenever we feel angry and frustrated. Very wise and beautiful poem. I read another poem once that asked the question, "How will I know when it's my time?" And God answers, "I give you gray hair and an aging body with each passing year." To age with grace, that's key.

I have a couple of "Freddie" acquaintances who will probably never reach the level of friend status due to most of what you point out. Such people (and there are also plenty of Fredericas to go around as well) are what Nature and those of us retaining a sense of living refrain from spending precious time focusing on being disagreeable because such is an earned right of aging. So, hopefully, your words will reach more of us that retain a sense of dignity and joy in reaching the age when there is so much to appreciate (even in spite of the often discouraging world picture.)
