Where do they go (dreams that perish)

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

All things come to the soul through its roots. Where the souls roots are makes all the difference. There can be no fruit or blossoms or healthy foliage without healthy roots.

Poem Artwork
Today, an unhappy spirit questioned
(despite what beneficial
environs exist
along a soul’s river,
where life might flourish
in nutrient rich soil)
why some
gardens dry up
and become more
blanched than bone dust…
.
With vague
comprehension,
vanity stared into the
mirrored gray-blue water and asked,
“why is it so many never take root? Tell me, please,
would you, where they go, dreams that perish?”
.
But there was
little discernible today,
in any way,
no kindly wisdom,
no revelation or sound, save a
sudden splash as a solitary seagull
alighted a smooth watery surface, and
began pecking flesh from a lifeless trout….

Above my beds head I have a dream catcher that catches and holds my wayward dreams & doesn't let go until my mind does allow it to do so, because dreams I have had of late are too scary to have again, ever again...-e

I ABSOLUTELY BELIEVE WITH EVERY BIT OF MY HEART, SOUL AND MIND...THAT NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAPPENS IN AN INDIVIDUAL'S LIFE THAT GOD DOESN'T CONTROL. I MEAN THAT'S IT FOR ME. IF I FOR ONE IOTA OF A SECOND THOUGHT THAT SOMEONE, OR, ANYTHING ELSE WAS IN CONTROL OF MY DESTINY THEN...I WOULD BE ENTIRELY LOST.

THAT SAID I MUST ASK...DO OUR DREAMS REALLY PERISH? DID NOT GOD SEE OUR END AT OUR BEGINNING? DID SOMETHING UNEXPECTED HAPPEN, POPPED-UP THAT HE DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT...DID NOT FORSEE? OR...DID WE SOMEHOW FALL SHORT OF HIS EXPECTATIONS? HOW COULD THIS BE WHEN HE WHO MADE US, IS HE WHO PLACED OUR STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES INSIDE OF US?

THERE ARE CERTAIN THINGS WE HAVE GOT TO KNOW, BEYOND A SHADOW OF A DOUBT ABOUT OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. AND, FOR ME, THERE ARE TWO IMPORTANT QUESTIONS THAT ONE MUST ANSWER; DOES GOD LOVE ME AND DOES HE WANT WHAT IS BEST FOR ME? IT IS ONLY THEN THAT WE CAN COME TO THE PLACE WHERE WE CAN ASK 'GOD' WHAT IS 'HIS' ULTIMATE DREAM FOR US?

YES...LAYING ASIDE 'OUR' DREAMS, 'OUR' GOALS, 'OUR' SOUGHT-AFTER REWARDS, OUR QUESTS TO REACH THE STARS AND BEYOND...WHAT, ABOVE ALL, IS 'GOD'S WILL' FOR US AS INDIVIDUALS? HOW...DO WE COME TO A SURRENDERED PLACE WHERE WHAT 'WE WANT' DOESN'T MATTER AND GOD'S DREAMS...HIS WILL...FOR OUR LIVES ARE ACCEPTED AND EMBRACED?

NOW PLEASE UNDERSTAND, I AM NOT SAYING NOT TO HONESTLY AND FAITHFULLY...TRY TO REACH OUR DREAMS. NO, BUT WHAT I AM SAYING IS; IF WE DON'T REACH THE EXPECTATIONS THAT 'WE WANTED' FOR OURSELVES AFTER TRYING WITH ALL OUR HEARTS IN COMPLETE FAIRNESS AND TOTAL HONESTY...WITHOUT VEERING TO DECEITFUL ACTS THAT 'MOW DOWN' OTHERS(FOR MANY HAVE DESTROYED THEMSELVES LOSING ALL SENSE OF KINDNESS AND HUMANITY'S RIGHT AND WRONG, TRYING TO REACH A DREAM)...THEN, THROUGH GOD-GIVEN STRENGTH AND LIGHT, ACQUIRE THROUGH DILIGENT PRAYER, THE ABILITY TO REALIZE THAT 'A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G' WE COULD ATTAIN DOWN HERE TO SATISFY OURSELVES TEMPORARILY...COMPARES VERY LITTLE TO WHAT GOD HAS IN STORE FOR US, ETERNALLY.

WITH THIS FOREMOST IN OUR MINDS...WE SEE THAT, DREAMS DON'T PERISH. FOR, A WISH PUT IN THE HANDS OF GOD...BECOMES A HOPE/DREAM. AND A HOPE/DREAM IN THE HANDS OF GOD IS...HIS. TO DO WITH IT AS 'HE WANTS'.

NEXT MONTH I WILL BE 77 YEARS OLD. DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY 'DREAMS' I'VE HAD TO SURRENDER TO GOD? CERTAINLY, SOMETIMES IT HURTS, BAD TO THE POINT OF TEARS, BUT HE PULLS ME TOGETHER AND REMINDS ME...I'M NOT 'HOME' YET, HALLELUJAH!

DO YOU REMEMBER THAT HYMN; 'I SURRENDER ALL'? I AM SURE YOU DO, THAT'S WHERE WE HAVE TO GO. WE WILL NEVER KNOW ALL THE 'MAL STUFF' THAT GOD SAVED US FROM BY NOT ALLOWING US TO REACH SOME OF OUR... 'DREAMS', UNTIL WE 'GET HOME'. AMEN.

EVERY NOW AND THEN YOU POST A SHARING THAT...JUST 'TURNS ON A FOUNTAIN INSIDE' AND I CAN'T HELP BUT, GO THERE. YOU DO, OF COURSE, REALIZE THAT WHILE I AM RESPONDING TO THIS POST...GOD/THE POTTER IS IN FACT, 'CHISELING' ME. SO, INDEED, MY DEAR BROTHER-IN-CHRIST, THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Interesting concept surrounding roots as a metaphor. Pity so few bother to learn and nurture that piece of reality. Well done, my friend.

I've heard others opine that purged dreams are the mind's way of discarding itself from dreams that are not important. Those few that stick are the ones that matter. It agrees with the wisdom in your last line.

A rather barren thought, until one reads the after line, indicating that good roots have to start somewhere and where one is at and right now, barren or not, is a good time to start.

hmm this is one that makes me stop and think, just like your other poems, it is a revelation of human behavior, reflected in the waters of
a Universal karma, nicely written dear Richard, I agree, so many dreams, sit by the way side, while others, we are still bathing in them,
one is the gift of writing, you've been blessed , take care, :)

A truly fascinating concept of the soul that has roots and that needs nourishment to grow. Excellent. Good poetry is always eye-opening.
