Poem Artwork
Serendipity
was involved in what happened
when I feted you,
but it gave me no pleasure
losing contact with your soul
.
So I tried shaping
the shifting times to suit us,
to build a safeguard
around the soft parts of you,
those parts prone to impairment
.
But all I did failed,
the colors began fading,
the blossoms fell, and
the fictions I’d once embraced
became a strangling hindrance
.
How does one cope with
an overwhelming sorrow,
a consuming storm,
when all you feel depletes you
and writing is not enough
.
But there was hope, still,
(I thought) in all these struggles,
life’s trying seasons
challenging ev’ry human
willing to search the unknown
.
Now,
.
each day I press on,
eager to write something new,
even as heartache
impedes my reaction to
livings wild rage of echoes
.
There’s a place for friends,
when forgetfulness deepens,
a place in the heart
where memories of closeness
remain strong in times of change

Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us every day... unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed, and very dear.

SO COMPLETELY TRUE, RICHARD. WHEN GOD ALLOWS 'CHANGE' IN OUR LIVES, WHATEVER IT MAY BE AND THOUGH IT MAY SEEM TO US INSURMOUNTABLE...HE ALSO GIVES US THE STRENGTH(IN JUST THE WAY WE NEED IT)TO PRESS-ON! SO ENJOYED, THANKS. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS.

Richard this touched me so deeply. What a beautiful, hopeful poem. I too feel loved ones who have passed are near me. I also believe that someday those I love will understand all the truth and be near me again, whether in life of death. Thank you for this outstanding poem.

So very aptly worded…
Yes for sure our loved ones walk beside us always,
and strongly sensed too I find..
Like Jeanne, I felt a ‘peaceful resolve’ in your words
and an acceptance which contributed to this outcome…

A beautiful heartfelt piece of writing…

There is a deep sadness, but yet a peaceful resolve reflected in your poem. I find "In time of change" very heartfelt, and your expression of loss deeply rooted, still I also admire the strength you express in the face of this loss.

Touched my heart .... thank you for sharing your lovely poem.

Intriguing in how you've spun out these words of sadness and the picture was aptly-used to represent those words.

I agree with you Richard, those we love walk beside us in this lifetime and most certainly the next. The soul is a beautiful mystery ad it holds the memories in its vessel splendidly, the older the heart the more precious the attachment gets, Thankyou for always gracing my heart with such deep enlightening words. Your always a writer to me, :)

I agree with Odin, “this thing called aging” offers a longer look in the rear view mirror because speed has reduced, along with everything else, save long-term memory. Your piece expresses how nonexempt from ‘overwhelming sorry’ seasoned persons are. I honed in on these two lines: “the fictions I’d once embraced/became a strangling hindrance”. That is extraordinarily precise a description of this mutation. Excellent conveyance you’ve written. ~~ djl

A very emotional awareness of who has meant the most to you over time. Some gone now but still by your side and your memories of them. Writing about it certainly does help manage the pain of the thoughts.

I feel glad that I do not have that kind of lagging regret for having lost something so near and dear. Yet.

There's intriguing synchronicity in your write today as it relates to my own. Very different premises, but ironically addressing some of the same kinds of focus. There truly is something magical, not depressing (at least for me) in the thought that I might not have realized this zest for reflection were it not for the paradox that age can often make you younger in thought and action. Of course, the action of my years climbing, marathoning and biking are behind me now, but there's a new action that keeps reminding me that it truly isn't over until it's over... and with continuing good health (knock wood) I've got a lot of great years ahead of me. A mile a day of walking and the kind of job that keeps me cognitively alert, sets me up for writing at day's end. For that, I'm grateful. From the way you write and comment, I'd say you have realized similiar advantages in this thing called aging. BTW, your accompanying pic was spot on with the branches showing many years of steadfastness. Well penned, Richard.

Such a heart-felt poem, vivid in its anguish, yet tempered by an element of hope. Balance is the key. Excellent.
