Addressing a Scumbag...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

A cathartic non-fiction characterization. Unfeigned friendship is hard to find.

Poem Artwork
Musing today,
to understand better
what it was I'd seen in you,
(Ab Initio)
I began to remember
how your artful philia was
only an agenda-driven-pretense…
.
Given this perception,
I began to look at you critically…
was it the soft puckering aesthesia,
you broadcast that extorted my trust?
Was it the
polished way
you fluxed along
creative boundaries?
Was it your way of schmoozing
others with false flattery? Was it the
perfectly proportioned play-acting that
I see now as being only a puppeteers
shadow show?
.
For a short season
you showered me with
(a kind of) reverent admiration,
which somehow I was taken in by,
deportment I believed at first to
be respectful and honest.
.
But it was all a con, and with my
eyes opened at last, I clearly began seeing
your agendum of artful pretense, a cowards false
humility, and the delusive extolment of others
to manipulate them for what he wanted
.
Having been swayed by (what
turned out being) a fictional pretense,
you essentially sought my favor
with facile parlance, and
rare insights,
while quietly doling (in snippets)
what you thought we needed from
each other to be compeers….
.
From one moment to the
next I drifted, happily captivated
with what seemed to be a friendship
based in courteous regard and
honorable substance. But it
wasn’t that at all….
I’d been drawn
down into
the dark underbelly
of a scumbag imposter,
codded by a master-deceiver
whose sole purpose was to pilfer
what he could for himself…
.
Looking back… as one now certainly
less vulnerable, a creative wanderer still
blossoming in prerequisite fecund season, and
one still fearlessly redefining the meaning of perceptivity,
you duped me once asshole, but twice was out of the question…

Oh!!! I don't even have words of how this hit me, Richard.
I adored Joni Mitchel and especially loved "Free Man in Paris" where her people were "asking for my time, trying to get ahead, they want to be a good friend of mine" has the same sorrow of knowing others will use you in the guise of friendship. That hurtsand can break your heart. I am so sorry this happened to you, and I am so grateful you have the gift of expressing in words what many understand. We need you!!
You are still one of my favorite writers!!!! Forever! :-)

If I were crass, I'd say this in an honest tribute
to our 45th president. But that would need more 4-letter
words. Still, it was a good scorching that real dead-beats need.

Sometimes when we are taken advantage of we are angry at the person but also ourselves for being taken for a ride. It only shows your great potential for trust, and though he took advantage of it, you should never regret that you followed your good heart. I can see how this has affected you, I pray you heal from it and move onto more deserving people in your life, Happy Thanksgiving Richard,:)

This scumbag must have hurt you very badly for such a strong reaction. We only have very few friends in a lifetime. The rest are acquaintances. Internet friends are not really friends until one reaches a point of mutual agreement, like meeting in person and connecting.

I have longtime friends who disagree with me philosophically, but remain friends. I hope you have friends like that who you can count on when you are in need. And that you can get over your anger and distrust so that you feel better about yourself.

It's happened to me more than once. It's so dangerous for those who tend to follow their hearts and want to think the best of everybody. A great poem most of us can relate to. Some wounds are hard to heal but suffering makes us able to help the suffering ones.

Once bitten, twice shy…
You sum up your feelings in such an
honest and well articulated way, with an
honesty that is open and refreshing…
For me the hardest part is not becoming
over cynical after an episode like this, as
I truly believe that there are more genuine and
kind people out there than the opposite…

Epic assessment, Richard. That was so chocked-full of substance and a profound portrayal of deception and cause and effect at its craftiest. So well articulated that I would think it an appropriate Dear John letter at least, but one with stellar language clear up to the end. The amount of damage and hurt contained in here was articulated in explicit detail. It makes for powerful compassion in the reading of it. Thank you for sharing this. And I’m sorry for the non-fiction of this story. ~~ djl

What I find intriguing about this piece is the multiplicity of adaptation your words can conjure up in the reader. I.e., there were parts of the text I thought might be leading me into a word or a phrase of principle e.g., love or compassion et al. The person or personage you ultimately seemed to finish on was readily identifiable for me, having experience similar duplicity of behavior in several I trusted and loved. All in all, I might have interpreted it in a broader sense that was intended by the writer, but in my defence, I'll allow that Socratic maxim of sanity to prevail: "Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings, so that you shall gain easily what others have labored hard for." Thank you for sharing your personal lesson and the universal application for us readers.

Some people would befriend us just for the benefit of themselves. When the deed is done they would toss you aside like they've never known you.

Unfortunately, I have been there many times because I liked to help friends. When I finally realized they weren't friends to begin with so I just chalked the experience off as a lesson in life that I needed to learn; but somehow, some distance in the future, I had let it happen again with some others who pretended to be my friends, then I just have only myself to blame.

Glad you are honest enough to write this experience out.

No doubt about it, many people wear marks, dupe us, take us in. As you said, it happens once perhaps, but not more with the same individual, when you see people for what they really are. Sometimes it is better to be alone than with "friends" who deceive us.
