Jasper...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

He was different than most of the others. He stood straight and square-shouldered, and his face, though aging, hadn’t been leathered and furrowed by alcoholism or drug use. But what was most curious to me were his eyes. They weren’t milky or vacant, they were like two lucid portals you could dive into another dimension through. Remembering a man named Jasper.

Poem Artwork
He stood there smiling warily
a roguish look indeed
slapdash clothing hung askew
and dragged beneath his feet
.
Both hands gesticulated
those feelings deep inside
it seemed at times an orchestra
was playing in his mind
.
He tottered back and forth a bit
while sharing words with me
his eyes would sparkle suddenly
and then a tear I’d see
.
“I used to be a better man,”
he said while standing tall,
“and all the girls used anecdotes
and spoke in southern drawls.”
.
Asking where the man was born
he turned and answered me:
“I think it was in Arkansas,
or maybe Tennessee”
.
I watched him as he fidgeted
deciding what to say
but all he shared were simple things
and then he turned away
.
Sensing my eyes probing him
to understand his plight
he turned around and smiled again
and said: “I have a thought….
.
I’ve been alone for several days
and things have been real bad
I lost my wallet recently
and every cent I had”
.
I asked if he’d been working hard
he said: “a circus show,”
looking up with downcast eyes
he said: “they let me go.
.
Please, I need some money sir
a place to sleep tonight
I was hoping you would understand
and help me in my plight.”
.
Offering him my sympathies
in lieu of something more
I contemplated giving him
what he’d been asking for
.
With staunch determination
I decided what to do
I reached inside my wallet
and some money I withdrew
.
The noble man began to smile
and then with arms outstretched
he hugged me with sincerity
I knew was not far-fetched
.
His face was like a sunrise bright
it glowed and warmed my soul
I felt as if the man had changed
and wasn’t in control
.
With zeal his eyes turned skyward,
on his face there was no fear
and when I handed him the bills
he bowed and disappeared….

I agree with the ‘other Diana’ that “we sense their sincerity and their wholesome energy.”
That painting you used is a stunning work of art to go together with the extraordinary ability you have in telling of this experience. To take an encounter, and after the moment passes, write about it as though it is still happening. To me, that says it still is . . and maybe will always ‘still be happening’ for you. Stunning moments have a way of writing on us with the permanence of indelible ink or wood engraving. I still remember 1994, The Yellow Daisy Festival, when I lived in Georgia state, the way an elderly man moved a wisp of hair from his silver-haired lady’s eyes, with such tenderness it made me flush just from seeing it. The gesture had me feeling as though it was happening to me. This that you wrote is like that to me. The connection came with this line:
“I watched him as he fidgeted
deciding what to say
but all he shared were simple things
and then he turned away “.

A little bit of kindness always goes a long way. I'm glad you did what you did.

One of your very best. I could feel the emotion of the experience coming through. "There but good fortune go you or I."

Such a noble tribute for such a noble man. Fine photo to accompany your memorable words as well. Such an interesting tale. Thank you for writing and posting. I have had such people pass through my life as well.

This was so heartwarming, and so skilfully written…
Sometimes the most interesting people we
meet, are strangers we have a short but
meaningful exchange with…we sense their
sincerity and their wholesome energy…

Compassion, care and simple humanity abound
in this wonderful poem…I enjoyed every word…

My regards,
Diana..🍃

Richard, your heart is huge, blossomed with the Heavenly Father, mercy overflowing....
This pen makes me think about many Words of God, especially He loves us more than many sparrows, before a creation leaves this earth, hits the ground he knows every single layer, speck of the heart and He cares so much in every living being that has breath because "He IS heart" and loves us all creation PERSONALLY . Wow, Jasper, you are endless, eternal, so profoundly loved beyond any any comprehension and our Lord said Foxes have holes, and the birds of the air nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head gives me profound rest, peace and comfort the God came in flesh is so humble and trusted, just trusted no mater circumstances...... ,For that i am to trust God too...!!! As every rolling stone rolls despite their situation are loved beyond measure...Yes we will open our hearts to least of these, although they are not least...

I love the human side of all your stories Richard, you perceive
others far more rigorously than most, perhaps its the rewards
of a well aged soul, immersed in love and compassion. How else to describe this poem, " real " * , God loves you, :)
