In spite of all that worked against me…

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

'Success is not final. Failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.' 'Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, 'I will try again tomorrow.'

Poem Artwork
I became
something unique,
birthed just like you,
against all odds and
all wars that raged
against possibility,
I became me
in a world of meez,
endeavoring to be apprehended
in spite of all that worked against me…
.
I began in convergence
just like you. A divine revelation,
(perhaps) or a sperm lucky enough
to find the egg. The passions of
MALE and FEMALE merging,
a momentary lapse of
morals (possibly)
finding a kind of fruition,
without scrupulous filtering,
or evolutionary impediment,
or something more cryptic
to equivocate things
even more….
.
Ever grappling to realize
a consummate expression,
another ego
espousing humility, a
tongue and groove idealist
treed in a system renouncing
man’s despairing struggle to be
more than just a hollow sound in a
world of meez and yuze all maneuvering
to lord it over everyone around them…
.
Honestly…. ask yourself,
is being germane,
or respected,
or a topic of debate,
or an example to be fashioned after,
carry a greater advantage when
your last year draws near…
Then ask yourself too:
Can I love you more than I love me?
Can I love me the way that you love you, or
is it that we both tolerate only a 2nd rate caricature
of someone we thought we were supposed to be,
and then judge what we do in light of them…
.
Remember….
that in spite of all
that worked against YOU,
you became something unique too,
birthed just like me
against all odds and wars
that raged against possibility,
YOU became YOU
In a world of
meez and yuze
endeavoring to be loved
respected and apprehended
in spite of all that worked against you…
.
Sure. Love yourself. But love others more.
.
So on and on and on it goes,
in this world of friends and foes,
notwithstanding how the river flows,
or how some assholes stab the soul, I
accept this one fact stubbornly, that
until my leaf falls from the tree, I
will always continue being me…

What a marvelous thought, becoming someone of value regardless of what works against us. Beautiful poem, Richard.

Love others more! That's the key, Richard. Without others there couldn't be me. That's something to think about each day. Thanks for the reminder in such a wonderful poem/song.

It takes great courage being you when the whole world goes against you sometimes, this reminds me of an old saying, " you might as well be you, everyone else is taken" Accepting yourself is the first step to maturity I think, lots of wisdom and bravery here :)

An introspective piece inspiring random thoughts. Truth to tell, being me is complicated. Firstly, in some way we are always changing from youth to maturity to old age, never staying the same. So, who is me? On the other hand, we always stay the same, there is an inner core wrapped in a personality that is we, you, they. So that we can't escape ourselves, we can't get away from me. Then there is the mask that we often wear, presenting some other self than me. So, what's that all about, trying to be someone else other than me. As I said, your poem has inspired random thoughts that need pursuing. Thanks for posting.

I hardly need the approval of anyone else's opinion whether or not I'm ME. I am an author and a writer. I'm always going to be me no matter what I write. If I didn't mean what I've said I would not have written it, even if it may offend some people, causing them to jump up and down inside their brains. How people react to what I've written is none of my business, but it is always good to know my words could cause a chain reaction.

Ahhh!!!! What's a writer going to do if he/she can't speak honestly? I don't need another's approval for my words, otherwise, I would not have been a writer. A writer always has a voice to share.

This is powerful and I feel your keeping it real Brother for your uniqueness.. One of the greatest gift's we can have in life is to not be tarnished through the war of life and people's expectations of who and what their ideal is of you. It takes absolute spit fire courage to stand for your true authentic self without worrying what others will think, act or feel towards you.....And we are being purified, sifted and renewed through the destruction of our old dead branches... What draws me to most hearts of humanity now is their gift of testimony in strength and mercy that will change millions of lives, to give unselfishly emotional healing in the storm of life and leaves others to feel, hey, I'm not the only one who feels this!!!
We are being purified as silver and breaking our thorny ground..
It is a beautiful time for faith, introspection and good upon the earth... His mantle will be given to us of guidance, generosity and forever love . For this we will see fresh fire and winds...We need profound die hard courage like never before at this tricks of the enemy... God bless you and Michelle.. ~ D

A proclamation of living life, not merely being alive. Yes, the "In a world of
meez and yuze
endeavoring to be loved
respected and apprehended
in spite of all that worked against you…
.
Sure. Love yourself. But love others more." Sadly, many never reach the "love other more" as they've not qualified themselves with love. Many believe and know you can't love another, or be love if one has not learned to love themselves... first. As you confidently state,"...that
until my leaf falls from the tree, I
will always continue being me." Therein resides the moral of this astute piece of poetry: most people know not of themselves, only what other people deem is the you of you. You are a fortunate being to have arrived at this place of wise understanding of what makes up the justification for taking your share of oxygen. Namaste, dear friend.
