Daybreak
felt endless in
vapory moist air,
the sounds & smells,
& those fleeting moments
involving hummingbirds, there
suddenly in peripheral blurs, singing
happily as they flit past,
‘tchik tchik tchik
tsip tsip
dzik dzik’
.
So we prepare,
and in ritual together
move as one along the sand,
hand in hand,
shoulder to shoulder,
heart to heart, humming
melodies born of love, as we
delight in the pleasantness of
creek and forest and wildflowers,
along where earth and sea
mingle, and where,
on gently sloping shores,
waves fell upon and withdrew
in drone cadence...
.
Along the way,
(as it often is in life)
a glimpse of cycles emerges,
types and shadows in the cries
of gulls vying for a noisome carcass
in frenzied competition to
gorge upon death,
.
so we watched,
instead of turning back,
until the gulls got suspicious . . .
And when
they took flight
bloody mouthed,
her disposition darkened,
and with a pained expression
she remembered her best friend
who had died in tenth grade,
.
so I draw her nearer,
to chase away the sorrow,
but tears fall all the same,
along the imprints of plovers,
and the squiggly markings
of sea turtles,
where we amble
together whispering
about life, and what matters,
as a briny mist flattens our hair,
and sand and pebbles are shuffled
in a constant harmony of change…

To love and be loved, is to feel the sun from both sides.
A NEW RACE OF HuMANS
I know the joy…the tearful joy, of one who has overcome death so many, many years ago.
