When we worry about the direction the world
is going, we have to remember that the young
do not worry like their elders, but bravely
change the world in ways we can’t imagine.

 Only the Young

When we were young,
and we were free,
the world was all,
we wanted it to be.

We loved and laughed,
tried, cried and lied,
and when someone left us,
we almost died.

For life was immediate,
and the emotions were real,
they played on our senses,
and made our minds reel.

We were invincible,
for life was a steal,
we danced with the devil,
and knew how to feel.

We explored the limits,
of the world we knew,
to the dismay of our elders,
our naivety showed through.

And the world we shaped,
became what we were,
a new world of wonder,
and an old world of fear.

For many of the lessons,
we learned were not new.
They were just the same,
that the elders had done too.

So the cycle continues,
like each season brand-new,
each generation has to learn,
the false from the true .

Only the young can do it,
not me and you.

This is wonderful. I loved it, and funny thing, it's just how I felt when I was younger.

Very beautiful. It is amazing how quickly does pass us by and in what seems like a blink of an eye, twenty, thirty years has passed. Wonderfully written.

I did not realize I became so old so quickly and lost that thrill-seeking mindset I used to have. Now I am cautious and reluctant to make changes for sure. As we age we must give up the task of creating a future for our children and let them pursue their own internal drive. Thanks Ron for the reminder

Sadly, as is evidenced by far too many of our so-called adult populous masquerading as grown ups, the adolescent mentality prevails and the "generation" now and tomorrow is apt to not grab the brass ring of maturing. We live in dumbing-down-times.

I enjoy the "new thoughts" as I sit silently amongst the youth of today. Of course, with their technology and 'instant' infomation they are so way ahead of so many born decades before. Let them search, fly, and find!

Love ya!

I feel great acceptance and optimism in this poem. It reads along like a Spring Break romp and the reader comments reveal how well you honed in on the crux of the issue. Your photo choice surely radiates the exuberance of this poem, Ron. Very good. ~~ Diana

Yes..my Dad used to sigh at our discussions and say philosophically "you can' t put an old head on young shoulders'...and it's true...each generation does it their way...some things the same, others very different, but we oldsters always think our ways were the best...
Fingers crossed for the future..

There is some kind of special energy that comes with not knowing that something is impossible. So many times we see the proof that if we believe it will be so, it finds a way to be so. Nice rhyme and rhythm in this offering, Ron.

"Who was there to guard youth from pain and death - youth
who could not, who had never been able to, guard itself?
Did they know too little?
Or was it that they knew to much, and therefore thought
they knew it all?" Agatha Christie, Nemesis.

Your poem, Ron...seized it bravely. Thanks for sharing.

I laugh with and compliment youngsters, not because they are funny or witty. So far it has kept them from shooting me.

good poem, Ron though i beg to differ with its conclusion .... i guess it depends how you feel and how well your body responds to its commands before it eventually stops functioning ...

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your magnificent poem today. Each verse reflects on how youth has such a care-free spirit and really just go with the flow. Their spirits and minds are at ease more so than the elders, I agree, each generation comes and they goes. Thanks for the write.

very good point, mr. ron. Figuring things out on your own draws excitement and fear. It's like opening a huge gate to numerous possibilities. Mistakes are ours to commit for us to learn. Still, we do need even a small window to look through, so we can prepare for those possibilities. No matter how stubborn our generation can be or the next to mine. We need a bit of wisdom from the elders to have some sort of a less ignorant decision. Thank you for sharing this. It is something to think about.

With age, comes wisdom and clarity that my youth never knew. Muhammad Ali said something to the order of, "A man who views the world at 50 the same way he did at 30 has wasted 20 years of his life." I,m still learning, and I,m not through.

I pretty much concur with your poem, Ron. Each generation becomes outlandish to the one before. My generation heralded rock and roll, the devil's music, free love and took drugs out of the ghetto and made them available for everyone. We also took on the social issues of the day. And now we are paying for all that excess. There is a quote, don't know who said it, but it goes like this . . . "Anyone can be president in America. That's the problem."

I remember this feeling of being invinsible in my younger years. Now as I grow older I smile at the "younger generation" for they don't realize that soon--very soon they to will be looking back at the things they did and wondering how they made it through. Very well written. made me think back to when i was full of ambitions and carefree. Never believe anything bad would happen to me.

If the young ones do not have any courage to do anything, that will be the time when we have to worry for their future.

A good write, and a great message.
