Thought I'd try to write a country song,
remembering how our mother sang to
us while cooking over that old wood stove.

Mom's wood cook stove was similar to this one © AntiqueStoves.net

My Mother Sang to Me

Those days by the fire,
of the stove's warm desire,
laid a foundation of love and trust.

She'd sing a sweet song,
while cooking all day long,
joyfully doing what she must.

Take me along and sing me a song,
back to the old used to be.
Sing me a song back where I long,
like my mother sang to me.

We were poor and in need,
but we were rich, indeed,
with mother's songs in the air.

When the cupboard was bare,
she taught us to share,
song filled our stomachs with care.

Take me along and sing me a song,
back to the old used to be.
Sing me a song back where I long,
like my mother sang to me.

Wherever I roam,
thoughts take me home,
to that place that's so,
warm in my heart.

Where she sang a song,
leaving memories that,
never will part.

Take me along and sing me a song,
back to the old used to be.
Sing me a song back where I long,
like my mother sang to me.

She's gone now to home,
but I still roam, remembering,
those good old days of song.

When mother sang to us,
making us trust,
that we were where we belong.

Take me along and sing me a song,
back to the old used to be.
Sing me a song back where I long,
like my mother sang to me.

Lovliest of ladies is your mother. The songs instilled
in your heart.

My mother was a lousy cook, but brave enough to try many ethnic dishes, and she couldn't sing a note. But she did read to us and doctor our wounds. My wife and I have a 1926 Quick Meal not unlike the one depicted, and we use it all winter to heat and bake, even in an otherwise solar environment. The country song I remember best is 'Don't Fence Me In' ... Thanks for reminding me.

SO SWEET A TRIBUTE, THIS IS. WRITTEN OF A MOTHER WHO HARDLY KNEW WHAT A BLESSING THE THOUGHTS OF HER SINGING WOULD BE TO HER SON MANY YEARS LATER. I ENVY BEAUTIFUL CHILDHOOD THOUGHTS THAT COMFORT AND INSPIRE. THANKS FOR THE SHARE. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Ron, you were blessed with a loving mother, and that old wood stove. My mother never sang to me and we did not have a wood stove. My paternal grandmother had one of those magical old wood stoves that made food preparation an art of love. Give thanks my friend for all you had, especially the loving mother. I like your song, publish it! May love and peace be always with you. Jon Michael

We were poor in need, but rich indeed. My sentiments exactly and beautifully penned. How it reminds me of my own experience, my own mother, my own sweet childhood now swallowed up by the past. This is much more than a song; it is a true poem. Many thanks, Ron.

I can remember my mom would put some black polish on her big wood stove in the kitchen. It would shine like it was brand new. I was very little then but I still remember that

Ron, this is wonderful! You paint a picture of love instilled by a joyous mother. I can imagine her at that old stove and also it brings memories of my own dear Mom at her coal stove. She liked to sing, too, and always taught us to be good to others.
I love this warm glimpse into your own heart.

A fine poem and beautiful tribute to your mom and the loving memories you've shared. You sang her praises with illustrations too!

Your poem reminds me of the hours my mother would rock me on her lap and read stories to me.

Ahhh . . . My mother would take time from beating me in what was an almost daily ritual to sometimes pull me into her lap on the front porch and rock me in the rocking chair and sing to me. Two hours later she might be beating me again. Sorry, Ron, to write a damper on your beautiful poem and I imagine a beautiful and loving mother.

It could have been me and my late Mom
As a child I would come
To sit on her knee when I was sick
To hear Faure's Berceuse
Before to bed I would go
It made me worship classical music

So many lost values embedded in this tribute to a part of the past that is respectfully missed by those like yourself...and to a lesser degree, myself. (I did have the fortunate experience of being part of my grandparents life with similar principals of moral living taught beside a coal stove.) The simpler ways of living life may be all but forgotten, but those of us that have had the experience, memory has become an additional piece of hard-wiring into our moral compass. Can't deny it. Well penned, Ron.
