Somewhat sleep deprived,
I find myself zoning out while
trying to do serious reading
or writing these days. Of course,
a huge Thanksgiving dinner
helps with that process.

Drowsing

Reading carefully to understand,
finding I'm drifting just offhand.

Off to a place I cannot see,
framed by the fog of where I be.

Eyes grow weary, drowsy,
eyelids drooping in frown.

Head bobs gently,
up, then down.

As I realize I'm falling,
catch myself, calling.

Drifting in the zone,
is anyone home?

Once more upright to return,
seeking one more page to turn.

When will I ever learn,
still burning with yearn.

But the stamina is gone,
though I try, on and on.

To do more every day,
than ever before, to stay.

Before bowing out,
in the game of life.

That zone is a time honored place frequented by maturing adults such as ourselves Ron. Though involuntarily I have become a frequent visitor. Wish that I were not since when abed insomnia rules me. Mat love and peace be always with you my friend. Jon Michael

I really enjoyed this. Well done, Ronald. I often think about all the other people who are lying awake just like me, at three o'clock in the morning.Thoughts run through my head, things to do tomorrow, words to write tomorrow. Sleep is precious and so are your thoughts.

As they say, when we snooze, we lose. Thankfully, my dogs do a very good job of keeping me awake, often at all hours of the day and night!

You can never underestimate the value of sleep and so many don't come close to getting enough. I'm sleep deprived daily. Relate to this completely.

Others reviewers have said it all, what more could I add, except that when I read this poem, I most certainly didn't yawn. If that be my compliment, then so be it. The state of drowsiness is an interesting one. You have made it moreso. Nicely done.

Yes I'm falling..falling....falling into that malaise of afternoon pillows. But I'm not going to do it this time. Am I? Ah well. Maybe another day. For now I'll drift. Enjoyed this Ron. Bob

Don't know about yourself Ron and the rest of you guys but when I have insomnia is when my creative side often pops up ( if that's what you want to call that stuff I write) or I just wake up after being asleep for a short period with an entire treatise in my head, like the "little brudder" one sitting on the floor, that was actually an awake dream almost.
Maybe it's the full moon's fault, ha!
Keep at it man, love your stuff.

I can sleep all night,
From dusk to dawn.
But come midday,
I can't stop the yawn.

Drowsiness happens just like that! You can't fight it. We tend to cram more than we can undertake in a day running in place on the treadmill of life.

You orchestrated the onset of drowsiness perfectly and poetically.

BOWING OUT OF THE GAME OF LIFE?!? RONALD, PLEASE...GET SOME SLEEP. IF YOU DON'T GET ENOUGH SLEEP YOU'RE GOING TO BE 'DROWSING' WHEN YOU'RE TRYING TO DO OTHER THINGS. AND YES, IT IS THAT TIME OF YEAR WHEN WE DO 'GOUGE' A BIT. SO, WATCH YOUR DIET, GET NEEDED SLEEP AND COME BACK FIGHTING AND WRITING! I LOVE YOUR WORK, RONALD. I BELIEVE I TOLD YOU THIS BEFORE. WE OFTEN DON'T AGREE ON CERTAIN SUBJECTS BUT YOU WRITE VERY WELL AND I ENJOY 'YOU' AND I'M GLAD FOR YOUR VOICE HERE ON AD. KEEP PUSHING AND THANKS FOR THE SHARE. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Since I've read this I have had a drowsy feeling. I love the way you wrote about drowsiness. I could actually feel it.

Love ya!

Sleep deprivation is a nasty fellow. He leads us to believe less of ourselves and often suggests we should give in and allow the frustration to make us irritable and then some. Amazing what giving in completely can do. I sit for hours on end editing and proofing for my job, and I find nodding off is a given. After several of these uninvited breaks in my concentration, I give in and take a nap. Naps, now, are the sleep deprivation's worst nightmare, disarming him once, sometimes several times a day. Then the coup de grāce is getting that much earned full night's sleep. Of course, there's probably a good reason why you're sleep deprived that this rant of simplistic logic has nothing to do with. So...not to sound unsympathetic, but it was fun reading about your slumber problem.

We could do with a Thanksgiving. A pre Christmas experience in the glows of a soft Fall night. That would make me drowsy; drunk by the colours of autumn with sloe wine and Parkin. That would make me enter Nirvana and experience your poem. Well written. Miller
