I'm not at all religious but I love those rousing spirituals that lift the spirit with their voices of mighty song.

Face the Music

We've all been down the path,
between hither and yon.
But don't know where we're going,
or what train we’re on.

Until we face the music,
on that distant dawn.
So loud and clear it comes,
when Gabriel blows his horn.

The journey's hard and steep,
on the many paths we choose.
It's easier to slide backward,
so easy just to lose.

We can't hold back the waters,
as they grow from our misuse.
And build up over years,
to a flood of our abuse.

It's then we face the music,
on that distant dawn.
So loud and clear it comes,
when Gabriel blows his horn.

When passion turns obsession,
we must realize our fate.
For if we don't realize it,
it may be way too late.

On the other side of nowhere,
is a land of make-believe.
To think that land is somewhere,
is only to deceive.

So we must face the music,
on that distant dawn.
So loud and clear it comes,
when Gabriel blows his horn.

What an apt combination, Ron! I'll be doing the tooting on my cornet on Monday, leading off a New Orleans-like celebration with the tune, "Ace in the Hole". The first line is "This town is full of guys who think they're might wise." Thinking you are wise and actually being wise is a pretty wide chasm. You, in your two poems, show you are among the wise ones. I liked both - a lot.

Hi there: When I read your poem the I was drawn to the conclusion that facing the music has much to do with self-awareness, finding the courage to face one's challenges head on, and being accountable for the choices we make. La Shawn

This would be great put to music...!
Eventually when Gabriel blows his horn..
We all must face the music...
Let's hope that Dawn is still
Pretty distant!

I love this part, Ron:

The journey's hard and steep,
on the many paths we choose.
It's easier to slide backward,
So easy just to lose.

Those lines sort of characterize the difficulties I've had throughout life. On the other hand, the apostle Paul said, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

Your work is always top-drawer, Ron, and this piece is a wonderful, interesting read throughout. You have definitely made your readers think.

Until we believe in the one true, living and invisible God! Our thoughts and its processes are limited to earth and all the spheres that encompasses earth! Religion is man made, spirituality comes from God our creator and we are his creatures. Our bodies are a temple in which the Lord God should dwell in, so please keep it clean. Any if one only believes in his or her minute self, it is a step towards the creator! Thanks Ron, peace!!!

Well, whether Gabriel, or Miles, there's nothing like horn to arrest some attention. Everyone has the "gates" their anticipating, and that's good. For me, it's a starting gate, the unknown re-manifestation of my ashes as they drift either upward into an attachment in the darkness, or fall heavy into the sea to become part of an evap renewal, it's all good, as long as we have a belief. Think about all those with secular beliefs like me that think its all over with taking that last breath. Never have been able to understand such thinking. Thanks for this reminder. And... wonder when that gig in the sky is gonna happen, eh?

Could that bright light at the end of the tunnel of death just be the end of the birth canal to start another, hopefully better, life...Or could we really go to another dimension to meet with our pasts, do we know either way; no we don't...So whatever floats your boat as to our ends, be thee an atheist or be thee with A god, friends...-e-

The long term effects of karma. Sooner or later the bluff is called. The music is answered and all bets are collected. I enjoyed. Bob

I love this poem. I love the simple truth of it, for even if someone isn't a "believer" there will always be a day of reckoning, either here or in the hereafter.

Dang good read, I love this so much. I love that about waters of misuse built into a flood of abuse. Our only salvation is hopefully one learns enough to build a boat to stay afloat and not drown in the meantime.

For every action, there is a reaction and consequence. Life isn't for the squeamish, and more often than not we face the music.

Another thought-provoking poem!
