My great-grandfather, Valentine Wenzel, came from Demstad, Germany, at 8 years old in 1852 with his family to Sheboygan Wisconsin. He married, Julia, an Alsace-Lorraine immigrant, there and established a homestead across the Black River from Withee, Wisconsin. The youngest of Valentine and Julia's 7 children, John, was my grandfather. He inherited the farm in 1925 and married the daughter of the owners of the general store in town. My mother was born on the farm and grew up there. About 2004 she returned to the old farmhouse that had been vacant for many years and the visit brought back memories of her childhood. My great-great-grandfather, Nelson Hull, was a blacksmith during the Civil War and also a pioneer in Wisconsin. My grandfather Wallace Hull was born in Sheboygan the same year as John, 1888.

Valentine

It was because of Valentine,

that I am here.

The long and the short of it,

this time of year.

He left his homeland,

in Germany, seeking a new life,

came to this great country,

and found him a wife.

Valentine learned of a land,

where homesteads could be got.

It was fording the Black River,

that he found the ideal spot.

He built a log cabin,

and carved out a farm.

Keeping the wolves at bay,

and his livestock from harm.

There was another log cabin,

and a barn for the livestock.

A farmhouse replaced the cabins,

that has weathered the clock.

Of Valentine's many children,

the youngest was John.

John inherited the farm,

when Valentine passed on.

With fifty deer shot,

from the back porch,

John provided for his family.

in the Depression's scorch.

My teenage memories,

hunting and fishing that land,

where my mother grew up,

and the farmhouse still stands.

So Valentine is more to me,

than honoring a saint.

My great-grandfather's legacy,

from a land that is great.

I know very little about my ancestors (all from France). You have a most interesting lineage, Ron. And your verses stand as a fine and meaningful tribute to your great-grandfather. Thank you for sharing. Love and peace to you,

Regis

When I saw the title to this poem I thought to myself, "he's a little late, isn't he?" But this is a wonderful write about your heritage. I love to hear of people's lineage and how they came to be who they are. This was a treat!!
