Why would we ever want to take a road to regret?

Roads to Regret

There are many roads we travel,

some are rough and some smooth.

Some a steep climb and some decline,

some are curvy, some straight, some blind.

But of all the roads we travel,

the ones we travel most,

are the ones that we may regret,

those easy ones we coast.

It is easy to spot a bad road,

but it's also easy not to heed,

just ride along with friends,

their friendship most in need.

Or follow in the family footsteps,

down timeworn family path,

making sure that your prodigy,

makes that tradition last.

The roads we take determine,

who we ultimately become.

Every road adds to our experience,

creating wisdom, every one.

We all take the wrong roads,

by mistake, every once in a while.

It is knowing when to turn around,

that determines our ultimate style.

So, when we travel the roads no more,

and look back on where we have gone.

We should not think only of regrets,

but the great roads that we traveled on.

WOW ! This poem is great ! You have really defined paths one travals and their ultimate out come. Life decisions can definately make a difference in many aspects of living. We are all unique, trying to find our way through the matrix of this lop sided world. Some have the ability to travel the right road and may get lost at times , but they can ultimately reach their final destination. Others just make wrong decisions and do not learn from their mistakes> Some just seem to self distruct!

Firstly, thank you for stopping by Ron, so warmly welcome.

Beautifully expressed, I would think your words ring true for many. A lot of wisdom in this poem.

Nice poem. I have taken the "road least travelled" by breaking away from traditions that women are supposed to follow. My life has had the adventure of meeting lots of interesting people and learning many new things. Maybe someday, if we all stay on the high road, our society will improve. (BTW, I'm glad you survived Nicholas. Here in NJ, we're still mopping up from Ida.)

Yes, regrets I have quite a few,
But in life what else is new,
Learning when to turn around,
Keeps us all closer to the ground...-e-

I think there is wisdom in the philosophical thinking that you have shared through your verses here, Ron. Love and peace to you,

Sometimes the ‘wrong roads’ take us to places we would never otherwise visit…

“Regrets, I’ve had a few but then again too few to mention…”

and in the end…we did it our way….!

Totally enjoyed this well thought out poem Ron…

Spoken well while dancing with your composed rhythm. Your content is for those mostly now off the roads of our dreams. But on a new road never the less.

Regrets come and go, may be justified or unjustified, but your last stanza summarizes so well, so remember the blessing and not the regrets of all the great roads we have traveled on. A finely measured poem.

Good poem. Yes, focus not on mistakes but the lessons learned by them and be thankful for good memories, good times, and experiences that forged our own greatness. I liked this!

Well expressed my friend and so true. I think we all have a few regrets but when we look at the over all map of where we came from and where we are hopefully for most of us the great memories will overshadow the regrets.
