Cancer: When Parents Cry

This is a revision of "Tears for Esa" A victim of retinoblastoma in 2007, when she was just 6 months old, Esa is doing well today. This revision makes the poem appropriate for any young cancer patient and family. Feel free to copy it to give to a young cancer patient's parents, and it's okay to change "girl" to "boy" and "she" to "he" if the patient is a boy.

A wee little girl lies sleeping;
She knows not what lies ahead.
For her parents, a nightmare is looming;
their hearts are filled with dread.
They prayed, they believed God would heal
their baby, the joy of their hearts;
but today, for their sweet little toddler,
infusions of chemo will start.

 Still pray, frightened Mommy and Daddy,
though God seems to be so far away.
He loves you more than you can fathom;
He's with you each step of the way.
He knows the path you are treading
is frightening, dark and untried,
but He holds your sweet babe in His heart
and He knows every tear you have cried.

Why must babies suffer and parents' hearts break?
Such questions, we can't understand.
The Lord knows the reason that's hidden to us;
He holds you secure in His hand.
Even though you can't see His hand in your pain,
Some day He'll explain it to you;
then you'll know as He's wiping the tears
from your eyes,
Your God has been faithful and true .

  "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart,
and lean not unto thine own understanding;
In all thy ways, acknowledge Him,
and He shall direct thy paths."

(Proverbs 3:5 & 6 KJV)

"...And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."
(Revelation 7:17  NIV)

Beautiful poem. A child so precious in need of His love
though tears fill our hearts.

Blessings of love and grace,

That feeling a parent has when their child is ill...never changes, no matter what the age of the child.
On my husband's last day on this earth, I watched as his mother left.
He was not aware she was gone.
She could not bare to watch her "baby" die.
I wish she had stayed to see the peace on his face, so she would forever remember that instead of the pain.
He was in a coma, but when I whispered to him that we would be fine, that if god was calling him, he should go, he opened his eyes, and smiled the most beautiful smile. The look of total joy in his face as he looked into my eyes made my heart skip a beat, for it was at that moment that he died.
But to this day, I know that he was not looking at me, but into the face of God!
It has brought me such peace and joy in the face of such loss.

Connie,

A very inspiring poem to those cursed with that awful disease. But as you say, who knows why God does this, there is always a plan. Wonderfully written and so meaningful.

No matter what trials we face, it is reassuring to know that God is in control. The thing to ask is: "Tell me, God, what do you want me to learn from this?"
A deep, touching, meaningful write, Connie. There is much comfort and hope in this write. Thank you.

Abundant Blessings,
Hugs,
Lena

An amazing poem from the heart. I am so glad Esa is doing well now but must have been such a hard time for you and your family. This poem will help and comfort many people who find themselves dealing with the pain and questions that you did. God bless. Baz

I just don't know what to say ..... your poem is so emotionally charged not just because it is about a child's illness ....it gets right to the heart of not understanding ... always asking why can God let such a thing happen ..... who has not asked that question ... the only answer is what you say in your poem --- God is with you every step of the way ... I think the only way to get through something like that is the belief that there is definitely something greater than each of us ... and we hope someday to truly understand this. But it is so hard ... so difficult .... I just don't know what else to say.... there are no words sufficient to say what I feel.
