Paddy’s Dream

This is a story told by my veterinarian, Becky Verna, with the all the glee of her Scots-Irish heritage. I don’t remember the verses exactly so I’ll have to improvise.

Poem Artwork

O'er the hills, through the dell,

Tired ‘o playing bagpipe fest,

Nipping Glenlivet rang Paddy’s bell,

On shaded knoll lay down to rest.

Two lasses found Paddy asleep,

Pinched each other, gave a nod.

One, the hussy, lifted kilt to peek.

Lo -- only his gift from God.

She grinned wickedly, winked just so,

Pulled a ribbon from her curls a fixin’,

Knotted to Paddy the cutest bow,

Then giggled home, these sly vixen.

Later, Paddy woke up hurtin’,

Hung over and feeling weird.

He raised his pleated curtain —

Wide-eyed at what appeared.

“Willie, me boy, me pride and joy,

I don’t know where we been.

But I see with me eyes,

From ye blue disguise,

Ye’ve up and won first prize!”
