Can You Spare a Dime?

My son and I saw such a man sitting side of the road, looking tired and forlorn. My son said he had talked to the man and learned he was once was in the war. We handed him a bottle of water and ran to the store and bought a footlong sub for him, but when we came back he was gone. My poem is written because of him.

Hey Mister,
Can You Spare a Dime?

The world is breathing down my neck
So much pain and grief to bear
Problems weighing me down,down
Until I have no love to share.

I once had a wonderful life
Lived in a fine old home
Had food, clothes and family
All those wonderful things are gone.

Now I make my days
Walking up and down streets
Begging for a dime or nickle
Anything to buy me a few eats.

I dig through the garbage cans
Looking for old scraps of food
Sometimes I'm lucky when
I find leftovers that aren't already chewed

Can't spend days wondering about tomorrow
There is no time if I am to live till then
I must concentrate on each minute
Fending for me, no help, no friend.

My clothes are tattered
Worn and pitifully threadbare
My shoes have no soles
I wrap them with dead cats' fur.

I am sick and tired
And wish my life would end
But I was brought up to believe life sacred
So, I must roam these streets

Staying alive until my life
Transcends this old earth
Where people look down on folks like me
And wonder why God gave such as me birth.

Hey Mister,
Can you spare a dime.....

What a true picture you paint, with your words, of the homeless. What a caring person you are. I wish more people felt this way. Your poem reminds me of something that happened with my daughter. She bought this homeless man a nice warm blanket, because it was cold. She returned from the store and he was gone.

The picture you paint pulls on the heart strings. I'm not sure why we still treat heros this way. I'd bet that the talk with your son meant just as much as the water! Love and Hugs~

This is very raw and very real, and walking down city streets you meet this person alot-most find it easier to look away, so it is great that you wrote this to make people look.

This is a very sad write about the homeless people. Whenever I walked by one I often wondered what it has been like with his/her life. After all, once upon a time they were babies who were once loved and cherished by their parents. Sad indeed!!! That is why if I ever walked by any of them I ALWAYS give them something, even if I couldn't spare it. A dime doesn't help much now, it can't buy them anything, a dollar is more like it if we want to give them at least a warm coffee.

A very thoughful write indeed!!!

Where people look down on folks like me - how so horrendously true, and how so very sad that many of these people are our very own valiant veterans - ignored by us, and by our own government.

...wishing that one thin dime...could erase the pain and suffering of many...I find your sensitive pen...to show the goodness of your heart...and the honesty of sad images one finds most everywhere.
beautiful work of sadness Jeanette...

This is very touching...I once asked someone why they wouldn't spare a dime for the homeless and he said (this is true)"I am an immigrant" I thought that was the most stupid thing I'd ever heard. He belived that all those who ask for help are liars and would never give them a thing. Between you and me, I wonder why he never recieves blessings....he is a very miserable person.

Jeanette, this is sad and heart wrenching, we never know what has caused a mind to go awry...that's why my heart goes out to everyone that I see that's homeless. The majority of these homeless people are people who have suffered terrible tragedies in life and they have never been able to grasp hold of their lives. Many are Vietnam Veterans, who served their country so well & many are suffering from some sort of mental illness. I pray every night that "no" one will be left homeless and without someone to love. A great write.
