Mankind's disrespect for nature will cost him dearly. Nature is patient, forgiving and abundant, upto a point where it cannot take more abuse. An excellent piece of writing Joyce! I like your descriptive imagery and the solution to the mystery is haunting. Quite a memorial to someone who was deeply loved.

Oh THIS is splendid work Joyce..you had me in suspense till the end..what an unexpected discovery..wow!
btw I adore old houses, villas and mansions..there is an abundance of them here in Croatia..not to mention the castles..I love exploring them reading up on their history..I truly SENSE the people that once lived there..it's a marvelous passtime!
There is a theme here that I've found in a collection of very diverse poetry today...passage of time through imagery and memory. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this Joyce and my favorite line is
"A time filled with fans, lace, and lemonade…". I love the image that played in my mind about the lady who might have graced that house once...

You had me captivated on the first line Joyce! I thought a ghost would appear in the window any minute, oh, how you can carry one through time with your imagination. This is compelling and worthy of continuing into a short story, let Nancy come back alive to find her tree cut down! Oh my, my imagination is running away with me, I love these old houses and imagine lives of the people that lived, loved and laughed there. The way you carried this write through was excellent. Loved it!
Joyce, this kept me intriqued line after line...the images are so well explained and the excitement brings an anxious enjoyment in reading! This is a good poem.
A most captivating poetic story, Joyce. There are many old homes I pass that I would truly love to know more about, especially about those who once lived, laughed, and loved in them.
Joyce, this is wonderful -- your writing always has intrigued me by it's everyday wonder and how you capture the essence of what you write about, but this one really stands out. It has to be an all-time favorite -- excellence at its best, dear Joyce.

Joyce, I really loved "The Mysterious Abode", and I must tell you why. The little town I live in has escaped urban renewal and has many old homes I see when I'm driving about. Like you, in your poem, I wonder what the people were like who once lived there. I wonder if they were happy, or if they had many problems to bear. There is so much history in those homes--all faded with time--presenting a mystery like the one in your poem. Beautifully written.
